Sony has unveiled the HXR-NX800 and PXW-Z200 professional camcorders with 4K 120fps, 24-480mm zoom, AI autofocus, live streaming, and auto-subject framing. The camcorders have similar features, with the PXW-Z200 adding 12G-SDI and timecode input and output for use primarily on television studio productions.
The camcorders use a one-inch Exmor RS CMOS sensor with an ISO range of 250 to 16000 and a resolution of 20.9 MP. The high sensor resolution enables the units to record oversampled 5K readout as high-quality 4K videos. The back-illuminated design captures more light than older sensor designs, allowing the camcorder to record dimly lit scenes down to 1.2 lux.
The HXR-NX800 and PXW-Z200 utilize an AI Processing Unit along with hundreds of contrast- and phase-detection AF points with 81% coverage of the image area to rapidly recognize humans and track them. With Auto Framing enabled, the cameras can automatically crop the image around a moving subject. Active Mode image stabilization minimizes camera shake even when the operator moves rapidly.
The 20x zoom lens has a focal length of 24-480 mm and a variable aperture of f/2.8 to f/4.5. The lens has a minimum focus distance of 10 mm and takes 72 mm filters. Internal ND filters can be adjusted from 1/4 ND to 1/128 ND on bright days to reduce the amount of incoming light. Videographers can monitor shoots on the 3.5-inch OLED monitor or 0.39-inch OLED viewfinder. They can also remotely monitor and control the cameras with an app for Android or Apple smartphones and tablets.
The camcorders can record continuously for up to 13 hours non-stop, perfect for ultra-long shoots like weddings. The maximum recording time is limited only by the memory card size and battery capacity. Two card slots support the CFexpress Type A and SDXC memory card types. Videos can be recorded in the XAVC (MXF), XAVC S-I (10-bit 4:2:2, intra-frame), and XAVC HS-L (H.265, 4:2:2 or 4:2:0, long-GOP), and XAVC S-L (H.264, 4:2:2 or 4:2:0, long-GOP) formats. Compatible batteries include the BP-U35 (~90 minute record time), BP-U70, and BP-U100 (over four hours of record time).
The two Sony camcorders measure 175.6 x 201.3 x 371.1 mm (7 x 8 x 14 5/8 inches). The HXR-NX800 weighs 1930 g (4 lbs. 4.1 oz.) while the PXW-Z200 weighs 1960 g (4 lbs. 5.1 oz.). The HXR-NX800 has an MSRP of $3,299.99, while the PXW-Z200 has an MSRP of $3,999.99. Both are expected to be available after September 19, 2024 (in the Sony Store on Amazon).
