Sony has made the PS5 Pro official, and it's the most expensive console from the company yet. The new PlayStation brings some key upgrades, including a better GPU. However, the CPU is the same as the non-Pro variant. In an interview with IGN, Digital Foundry's Richard Leadbetter says that the same CPU could be bad news for games like GTA 6.
More specifically, Richard believes that it will be challenging to get Grand Theft Auto Six to run at 60 FPS on the PlayStation 5 Pro if the base PS5 targets 30 FPS. As Richard notes, it will not be due to the GPU, as the upcoming console has seen a boost in that department.
Richard explains that in GTA titles, "there's a multitude of simulation work running concurrently and constantly." Grand Theft Auto 6 is also expected to feature "one of the most realistic depictions of city life" that we will ever see in a game. All this will take a toll on the CPU, as it will be responsible for handling all the simulation loads.
The hardware expert does believe that the PS5 Pro will be able to offer higher-quality visuals, thanks to featuring a GPU with 67% more Compute Units(CUs) than the standard PlayStation 5. Of course, the CPU inside the upcoming console did see a 10% boost in clock speeds.
However, that improvement in the CPU department could only result in a stable performance, not a higher FPS in GTA VI. While there's a possibility that Rockstar may target 60 FPS on the standard PS5 (Slim available on Amazon), Richard says that there has been "no evidence so far to suggest" that.
Another thing to note is that every GTA game that initially launched on consoles targeted 30 FPS. But again, given that Rockstar plans to release Grand Theft Auto 6 in "Fall 2025," it's still relatively early to clearly say what the performance will be like on the new gaming console.
