Ubuntu 22.04.5 launches as a minor update to the 22.04 LTS branch
Released on April 21st, 2022, Ubuntu 22.04 LTS "Jammy Jellyfish" will get support until April 2027. Its latest update, unleashed yesterday, was supposed to arrive two weeks ago. However, the previously planned release date was the same as that of the 24.04.1 LTS update, so Canonical decided to postpone the launch of the 22.04.5 LTS update so that both would get the deserved attention.
While Ubuntu 22.04.5 LTS does not come with any major visual or functional changes, it packs quite a few tweaks and fixes, as well as multiple updated packages. These are the highlights of the rather long list of refreshed components:
- GCC 11.2.0, glibc 2.35, and binutils 2.38.
- Python 3.10, Perl 5.34.0.
- LLVM 14, golang 1.18.x, rustc 1.58.
- systemd v249.11.
- OpenSSL 3.0.
- Firefox 103 and Thunderbird 91.
- LibreOffice 7.3.
- PulseAudio 16.
- Django 3.2.12.
- PostgreSQL 14.
- BIND 9.18.1.
In addition to the above, it should also be noted that Ubuntu Desktop gets 10 color choices for dark and light styles, GNOME received features and fixes for both version 41 and version 42, and more. All the details can be found in the official release notes, available via the link in the Source(s) section.
Those who are planning to keep using Ubuntu 22 on their desktop PCs might want to check out Richard Petersen's in-depth guide Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Desktop: Applications and Administration, which currently goes for $26 on Kindle and $45 in paperback version.
