Canada, get ready to check your wallets! A brand-new $2 coin is hitting circulation, and this one's a salute to the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), which is celebrating its 100th anniversary.

The Royal Canadian Mint has rolled out the commemorative coin to honour a century of service and sacrifice by the RCAF in protecting Canada and supporting global peacekeeping missions.

Unveiled at a ceremony at Canadian Forces Base Winnipeg on Wednesday, this stunning new circulation coin showcases a collection of aircraft that have been integral to the RCAF's operations over the last 100 years.

Over the past century, the Royal Canadian Air Force has played a vital role in both Canada's defence and global peacekeeping efforts. It's also been instrumental in search and rescue missions, often saving lives in remote areas across the country. From military operations to humanitarian aid during disasters, the RCAF's history is marked by service and innovation.

The reverse side of the new coin was designed by Canadian illustrator Pui Yan Fung, with the inner core of the toonie featuring the RCAF roundel and the iconic CC-130 Hercules aircraft — which has been a workhorse for the force's transport fleet for decades — as well as the double dates 1924-2024. Surrounding it are eight more aircraft, including the CF-188 Hornet and the CH-146 Griffon helicopter — a visual history of Canada's airborne defence.

The obverse side of the coin features the effigy of King Charles III, making this not just a symbol of national pride but a piece of modern Canadian currency.

The Mint confirmed that these special new toonies will be entering circulation starting Wednesday, September 18, so you could find one in your change very soon. There will be both coloured and uncoloured versions in circulation.

"The Royal Canadian Air Forces belongs to all Canadians and in our centennial year, we are pleased to partner with the Royal Canadian Mint to showcase some of the aircraft that have contributed to training and security at home and around the world," said Lieutenant General Eric Kenny, Commander of the Royal Canadian Air Force.

"As Canadians go about their day, they will soon carry with them a reminder of the iconic aircraft that have carried our aviators past and present over the last century."

Collectors, keep your eyes peeled! There are both coloured and uncoloured versions of the coin, with special collector's products available, including rolls of uncirculated coins and keepsake sets. Whether you're grabbing one through regular change or snagging a collector's edition, this coin will definitely make a cool addition to any collection.

With so many coins set to circulate, you'll have plenty of chances to own a little piece of Canadian history — but don't wait too long, because these special edition coins are sure to be a hot commodity!
