Yesterday, the Fedora Project announced that Fedora Linux 41 is on its way and should arrive next month as previously unveiled, but those interested in the future of this two-decade-old continuation of the Red Hat Linux project can already take it for a spin as a beta-stage piece of code. The list of beta releases now available consists of the workstation and server versions, as well as Fedora IoT, Cloud, and CoreOS "next" stream. However, those eager to try out the beta can also update their existing software environment using DNF system-upgrade.
Below are a few highlights of Fedora Linux 41 beta:
- Redis, which has recently shifted to a proprietary license, has been replaced with Valkey.
- Python 2 goes away with Fedora 41 and gets replaced by PyPy.
- Previously removed due to the lack of support for Secure Boot, the proprietary Nvidia video driver returns, this time with Secure Boot supported.
- The dnf package management command is now updated to version 5.
- The RPM package management tool gets updated to version 4.20.
- KDE Plasma Mobile brings the KDE Plasma Desktop to mobile as a Spin, promising support for phones, tablets, and convertibles.
- LXQt updated to version 2.0, adding Wayland support and porting the desktop to Qt 6.
- Fedora Miracle Spin, with support for low-end ARM and x86 hardware.
Those who are still using Fedora 39 should remember that this branch will be supported until mid-November, while Fedora 40's end-of-life date is set on April 13th, 2025.
Beginners and experienced Fedora users alike should take advantage of Alex Callejas' Fedora Linux System Administration: Install, manage, and secure your Fedora Linux environments, which is available on Kindle for $38.99 instead of $51.99 (25% off), while the paperback version goes for $58.32.
