Blockchain Security Firm PeckShield Warns of Compromised Decentraland Account Impersonating MANA Airdrop

Blockchain security firm PeckShield highlighted a concerning development on Sept. 19, warning that the official Decentraland (MANA) X account had been compromised.

According to the report, attackers are using the compromised account to spread a phishing link that claims to offer a MANA token airdrop, targeting the virtual reality (VR) platform’s social media followers. The link leads to a website that attempts to trick users into connecting their wallets to claim the airdrop, ultimately draining their funds.

PeckShield has urged users to avoid interacting with the official Decentraland account, not clicking on the link or engaging with any related content. The firm advises waiting for further announcements from the VR platform’s social media account to confirm that the account has been secured.

This method of social media breach is becoming an increasingly common trend, as evidenced by the recent incident on Sept. 18, where several high-profile crypto scam announcements were posted on hacked social media accounts.

The Decentraland account takeover began with scam announcements at 01:50 AM UTC on Sept. 19, introducing the MANA airdrop allocation for Decentraland’s X community and pinning the post.

To bolster the phishing scam, the attacker commented on the scam announcement (and following announcements) stating that comments were disabled "due to malicious links."

The last post on the VR platform’s social media page that was not related to the scam airdrop appeared at around 10:00 PM UTC on Sept. 18, showcasing the platform's community fashion choices.

In an exclusive interview with Kitboga, a renowned scambaiter, on Sept. 12, Cointelegraph learned some tips for avoiding scammer tactics.

Kitboga highlighted that one common tactic employed by every scammer is "giving you a sense of urgency," which should be countered with calm consideration to avoid falling victim to the scam.

Applying Kitboga's advice to the Decentraland scenario, the platform’s followers should remain composed and carefully assess the situation regarding the reported takeover of the VR platform’s X account.
