If you are looking for an E Ink device that can be used for note-taking, there are a lot of options available: from Amazon's Kindle Scribe (curr. $339 on Amazon) to the recently announced reMarkable Paper Pro. The e-notebook space is a pretty competitive one, and manufacturers have to come up with unique features to stand out, and for the upcoming Supernote A5 X2, it has chosen modularity as its selling point.
The Supernote A5 X2 isn't out yet but the manufacturer has released a bunch of details on its website to whet our appetite. When it launches, it will arrive as a successor to the Supernote A5 X. Supernote says the A5 X2 is slimmer at 5.9 mm than its predecessor which has a thickness of 7.2 mm. It will also be 15% lighter, and its 10.7-inch black and white screen will have a 33% higher PPI than the Supernote A5 X's 10.3-inch screen.
However, what makes the Supernote A5 X2 truly unique is its modular design. According to the manufacturer, the e-notebook will have an upgradeable motherboard, and it demonstrates it with a stop motion gif showing the motherboard of its smaller e-notebook, the Supernote A6 X2, being transferred to the Supernote A5 X2.
In addition to the motherboard being replaceable, the A5 X2 will also have a replaceable battery and an expandable storage slot like the Supernote A6 X2. The Supernote A5 X2 will have touch-sensitive sidebars that make navigation easy and a gyroscope so users can easily switch between portrait and landscape mode.
4There are also foot pads on the back to keep it from moving around, an attachable pen loop to hold a stylus, and a charging port at the top so you can write while charging without the cable getting in the way.
The Supernote A5 X2 doesn't have a release date yet. It was supposed to launch in Q2 of this year, and now the third quarter is almost over which leaves one more quarter before the year wraps up. With respect to price, the Supernote A5 X2 is expected to keep the $415 price tag of its predecessor. However, there's the possibility it may cost a bit more, but likely not as much as the $579 reMarkable Paper Pro.
