Anbernic RG35XX SP: Anbernic releases refresh of popular retro gaming handheld with Game Boy Advance SP design

Less than a fortnight has passed since early details about a possible RG35XX SP (curr. $89.99 on Amazon) refresh surfaced online. While Retro Dodo claimed to have received an image showing these new models, Anbernic had not publicly confirmed this image was accurate. Instead, it launched the RG406V a week later, full details of which we have covered separately.

Typically, Anbernic releases one device a month. However, it has now introduced its promised RG35XX SP refresh. As expected, Anbernic has created three new colour options, all of which have translucent finishes. With that being said, they are not quite as Retro Dodo described.

For reference, the website believed that Anbernic intended to offer the RG35XX SP in Transparent Green, Transparent Pink and Transparent White colours. Although green and white were accurate, the third option is red, not pink. At any rate, Anbernic's refresh expands the RG35XX SP colour options to seven, five of which have translucent finishes.

Fundamentally, Anbernic's new release contains the same underlying hardware as the original RG35XX SP. Thus, the Transparent Green, Transparent Red and Transparent White options feature a 3.5-inch IPS display that outputs at 640 x 480 pixels in a clamshell form factor. Additionally, the Game Boy Advance SP-inspired device utilises a 3,300 mAh battery, plus an Allwinner H700 chipset and 1 GB of RAM like many of Anbernic's other recent RG35XX releases. Likewise, the refresh starts at $59.99 with a 64 GB MicroSD card but rises to $74.99 and $89.99 with 128 GB and 256 GB secondary MicroSD cards, respectively.
