At launch, Intel claimed that the Arc 140V of its new Lunar Lake lineup is the best built-in GPU, and as we've found in our review of the Asus Zenbook S 14 UX5406, the new iGPU is indeed a proper competitor to the Radeon 890M. However, how well will the performance be when it's inside a gaming handheld?
To figure that out, ETA Prime has put the Core Ultra 7 258V to the test. The YouTuber has put the new Intel processor against the Ryzen Z1 Extreme, which has the AMD Radeon 780M (512 GB Legion Go curr. $599.99 on Best Buy). ETA has tested these two chips in a couple of games in 17W and 25W TDPs.
The first game that the YouTuber has tested is Shadow of the Tomb Raider. At 1080p with medium graphics settings and 25W TPD, the Arc 140V averaged 66 FPS, and the Radeon 780M had an average FPS of 49 FPS. At 17W, it's 53 FPS and 43 FPS, respectively.
Next, ETA Prime tested Forza Horizon 5at 1080p and medium settings. At 25W, the Core Ultra 7 258V had an average FPS of 55, while the Ryzen Z1 Extreme pulled ahead with an average of 75 FPS. The story remains the same at 17W, with 39 FPS and 59 FPS, respectively.
Another game that was put to the test is Cyberpunk 2077at 1080p and medium settings. While at 25W TDP, the Radeon 780M averaged 115 FPS, while the Arc 140V outpaced it with an average of 120 FPS. In 17W TDP, they had 40 FPS and 42 FPS, respectively.
Finally, ETA Prime has compared the performance of the two on Black Myth: Wukong. At 1080p, medium settings, and 25W TDP, the Z1 Extreme took the lead with an average FPS of 37, while the Core Ultra 7 258V had 34 FPS. So, currently, it seems that the Arc 140V can trade blows with the Radeon 780M at lower TDPs.
With this level of performance, it will be interesting to see how well the MSI Claw 8 AI does against the competitors. It will feature the same chipset, but AMD can pull ahead of the competition by a little with the Ryzen Z2 Extreme. Of course, it's worth noting that the Meteor Lake got better with updates, and the same is expected for the Lunar Lake iGPUs.
