Your 20p could be worth a lot more - because of an imperfection

Some 20p coins could be worth a small fortune - and it's all down to a minting error.

While some might not think twice about the loose change in their pockets, some coins could actually be highly valuable.

Rare 20p pieces have been known to fetch large sums at auction - so if you happen to stumble upon a coveted coin in your change, you could be in luck.

Whether you choose to sell them online, in person at an auction or through a dealer, these coins could help you turn a tidy profit.

Any coin with a minting error could be worth a lot, as very few make it into circulation.

The value of a coin also fluctuates based on factors such as demand and rarity.

But it's important to remember there's no guarantee of making big bucks if you decide to sell your change.

Anyone can list a coin on eBay and ask any price they want - but a coin is only ever worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

Checking recently sold items will give you a better idea of what people are willing to shell out for a specific coin.

If you managed to sell all of the coins mentioned below for their top value, you could rake in up to £3,312.

The undated 20p is considered the "holy grail of change collecting", according to ChangeChecker.

Since its release in 2008, collectors have been on a relentless hunt for this valuable coin.

The Royal Mint had decided to shift the date from the back to the front of every 20p piece.

But in a brilliant blunder, a batch of between 50,000 and 250,000 coins was circulated without any date at all.

Kimberley Day from RWB auctions said: "These British coins were the first in more than three hundred years to enter circulation with no date.

"Real examples should have no date on either side but otherwise look similar to standard 20ps.

"These coins sell online for up to £100."

We found on eBay that one of these error coins sold for £75 on September 25.

Another fetched £69.99 on September 20, and a third went for £68 on September 15.
