Rare US Coin: Recently Discovered Continental Currency Dollar From 1776 Sells for Over $30,000 (£25,000) at Auction
In the Cotswolds of England, a simple toffee tin contained the valuable Continental Currency Dollar from 1776. This coin is extremely rare
A rare U.S. coin was recently discovered in an unusual hiding spot and sold for over $30,000 (£25,000) at auction.
The Continental Currency Dollar from 1776 was found in a simple toffee tin in the Cotswolds of England. Only a few hundred of these coins were ever made, and they were minted in the late 1700s. The owner of the tin, who inherited it and its contents from a relative, had no idea about the coin’s worth.
After being reported missing, the coin was sent to the Numismatic Guaranty Company in the U.S. for evaluation. Experts there assessed its value to be quite high, potentially life-changing.
Why is the 1776 Continental Currency Dollar worth so much money?
If you know anything about American history, you may have noticed that 1776 is a significant year for the country. This dollar does, in fact, date back to the year of American independence.
The coin is rare because it was produced in small quantities. It’s thought that of the 6,000 that were produced, probably only about 100 remain.
According to AS News, the pewter coin discovery was rated as “in the top five of my career to date” by an auction house representative, who also said that it was “the kind of thing every auctioneer up and down the country hopes they’ll find.”
“It was examined by a committee of specialists and X-rayed and put through other scientific tests, and we were delighted to receive a notification a few days ago to tell us that it is genuine.”
How can you tell if a coin find is a gold mine?
Finding rare coins in ordinary places isn’t as unlikely as it sounds. Many valuable coins can be hidden in basements, attics, and even toffee tins. If you have an old collection of pocket change, it might be worth taking another look.
Check online to see if there’s any information about its value. You never know what hidden treasures might be tucked away in your spare change!
