The speculations behind the creator of Bitcoin are not new and hence the identity of Bitcoin's elusive creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, has been one of the greatest mysteries in the crypto world.
Bitcoin core developer Peter Todd has denied claims made by HBO in its recent documentary Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery, which speculates that Todd is the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto.
The documentary, which aired on December 15, presents a theory that Todd, who began communicating with early Bitcoin contributor Hal Finney in 1999, at the age of 15, may in fact be Nakamoto.
However, the evidence put forth by HBO has been widely criticized by cryptographers and Bitcoin enthusiasts alike.
“Some of the evidence in the HBO doc is clearly ridiculous,” BitMEX Research wrote in a commentary on the documentary.
“The documentary claims that Peter’s early communications with Satoshi, combined with his technical Bitcoin knowledge, makes him a candidate for being Satoshi. But there’s zero reason to believe this.”
Jameson Lopp, co-founder of Bitcoin company Casa, also took to X to poke fun at the claims, suggesting that if Nakamoto is still alive and watching, they must be entertained by the new speculation.
“I’m not convinced by the HBO doc theory, but I have to admit that if Satoshi is still out there watching, I bet they’re getting a good laugh at this,” Lopp wrote.
Todd himself has also denied the claims, responding directly on X, “I’m not Satoshi,” both before and after the documentary aired.
Despite the rumors, which began swirling again in 2023, Todd is considered a prominent figure in the cryptocurrency industry.
He has worked on major projects including Zcash and Dark Wallet, and continues to be involved in Bitcoin and blockchain initiatives.
