HBO's New Doc Claims to Have Unmasked Bitcoin Creator Satoshi Nakamoto
The film suggests that Canadian Bitcoin Core developer Peter Todd is actually Nakamoto, though Todd called the claims "ludicrous."
HBO's new documentary, Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery, claims to have uncovered the identity of the elusive creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto.
The film suggests that Canadian Bitcoin Core developer Peter Todd is actually Nakamoto, though Todd quickly dismissed the claims as "ludicrous."
"I am not Satoshi Nakamoto," he told the BBC.
The documentary is now available to stream on Max.
It follows several leads in an attempt to uncover the true identity of the mysterious Bitcoin creator, whose net worth could be astronomical.
According to recent data from CoinMarketCap, 1 BTC is currently valued at more than $58,000, and Satoshi's wallet contains nearly 1.1 million BTC.
At the time of writing, this would put Satoshi's net worth at more than $65 billion, making them the 20th richest global entity, according to Forbes' 2023 Billionaires List.
However, as Todd argues, revealing this information could also put his life at risk.
"If I was to out myself as Satoshi, I would be putting myself and those around me in danger," he said.
"Satoshi is the 20th-wealthiest global entity, and that would make me a target for kidnappers, blackmailers, extortionists and worse."
Several crypto sites are also critical of the news.
CoinTelegraph said the documentary is flawed with "contradictions and timeline errors," noting that HBO seems to have taken it too seriously when Todd sarcastically remarks that he is Satoshi in the film.
"The documentary contains several factual errors and contradictions, making it difficult to take seriously," the site wrote.
"One glaring example is when Todd himself sarcastically states that he is Satoshi during the film, which HBO appears to have taken at face value."
Bloomberg reports that the identity of Satoshi Nakamoto has been a topic of investigation since at least 2011.
A physicist named Dorian Nakamoto denied being Satoshi after Newsweek made the claim in 2014.
The next year, the New York Times suggested it could be Nick Szabo, a computer scientist.
Meanwhile, several figures have jokingly or seriously claimed to be the Bitcoin inventor over the years.
In March, a U.K. judge ruled that Australian Craig Wright was not Bitcoin's creator after he proclaimed himself to be Satoshi Nakもと.
