Worldcoin, a cryptocurrency project founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has announced a rebranding to World Network and plans to expand efforts to scan every human's iris using its "orb" devices.

The project, which aims to create a decentralized digital identity system, offers World ID, described as a "digital passport" to distinguish real humans from AI chatbots online.

Amidst scrutiny over its data collection practices, World Network unveiled a new version of its orb iris-scanning device at an event in San Francisco on Thursday. The updated orb reportedly boasts 5G connectivity and enhanced privacy and security features.

To obtain a World ID, customers undergo an in-person iris scan using the orb, which is approximately the size of a bowling ball. Upon successful verification, a World ID is generated, and in certain countries, individuals may receive a cryptocurrency token called WLD as an incentive.

The company behind World Network, Tools for Humanity, is based in San Francisco and Erlangen, Germany. Since its launch in July 2023, over 6.9 million people have had their irises scanned, according to the company.

However, the project has faced criticism from privacy campaigners over the collection, storage, and use of personal data. Earlier this year, Spain and Portugal briefly banned World Network, while Argentina and Britain announced plans to examine the project.
