Buterin highlighted the tradeoff between permissioned and permissionless systems in the context of currencies, noting that any currency is permissioned to some degree. He explained that there is a continuous spectrum of permissionedness, ranging from ApeCoin, which is open to all Web3 users, to ZuVillage, which has three levels of access.

“You could imagine a quadratic funding style mechanism, weighted by existing membership points, to accumulate membership points. This is the sort of thing that I would love to see the Optimism Citizens’ House, Zuzalu communities, and other DAOs experimenting with,” Buterin added.

He emphasized the need for DAOs to explore decentralized and permissionless methods of formalizing membership, beyond simply considering token holdings as a factor in determining participation rights.

Buterin's comments come as several major DAOs, including ApeCoin, Arbitrum, and Optimism, are facing challenges related to membership and governance. These DAOs have been discussing and implementing various strategies to balance participation, decentralization, and the overall health of their respective ecosystems.

ApeCoin DAO recently announced the launch of ApeChain, an Arbitrum Orbit layer-3 blockchain, which has sparked interest among traders and investors. The APE token has surged 110% in a week and is currently trading around $1.61.

Meanwhile, Arbitrum (ARB) and Optimism (OP) tokens have also seen modest gains. ARB is up 1% in 24 hours and 7% in a week, trading at $0.5883, while OP has gained just 3% in 30 days, trading at $1.74.

Buterin has been actively sharing his thoughts on various aspects of Ethereum and the crypto ecosystem, which have often influenced the price movements of ETH and other cryptocurrencies.
