Does `object-fit` Work with Canvas Elements?

Can Object-fit be Applied to Canvas Elements?

Despite extensive research, it has been difficult to determine whether object-fit can be used with canvas elements. Some experiments have shown unexpected behavior, leaving developers uncertain about its functionality.

Defining Object-fit

Object-fit determines how an object reacts to changes in its aspect ratio. When a parent element's dimensions alter, the object-fit property adjusts the contained object to maintain its integrity. This property applies solely to replaced elements, which include canvas elements.

Effect on Canvas Elements

Object-fit only takes effect when there is a ratio change, i.e., when the aspect ratio of the canvas element is altered. In such scenarios, the object-fit property applies the following transformations:

  • Object-fit: cover: Stretches the contained image to cover the entire parent element, potentially distorting the image.
  • Object-fit: contain: Maintains the aspect ratio of the image within the parent element, leaving empty space if necessary.

Example

The following code demonstrates the effect of object-fit on canvas elements:

<code class="html"><div class="box">
  <canvas width="200" height="200"></canvas>
</div>
<div class="box">
  <canvas width="200" height="200" style="object-fit:contain;"></canvas>
</div>
<div class="box">
  <canvas width="200" height="200" style="object-fit:cover;"></canvas>
</div></code>
Copy after login

In this case, the element without object-fit will distort, while the element with object-fit: contain will maintain its original aspect ratio. The element with object-fit: cover will stretch the image to fill the parent element's dimensions.
