Why Am I Getting the

1273 - Unknown Collation: 'utf8mb4_unicode_ci' in cPanel

When attempting to import a WordPress database from a local machine to a hosted cPanel phpMyAdmin environment, users may encounter an error message stating, "#1273 - Unknown collation: 'utf8mb4_unicode_ci'."

Problem Description:

The imported database has a collation type ('utf8mb4_unicode_ci') that is not recognized or supported by the cPanel environment.

Solution:

To resolve this issue, follow these steps during the export process from the local machine:

  1. Select the "Export" tab for the database.
  2. Choose the "Custom" radio button.
  3. In the "Format-specific options" section, change the dropdown for "Database system or older MySQL server to maximize output compatibility with:" to "MYSQL40."
  4. Scroll down and click "GO."

Note:

While this solution has been reported to work, it is recommended to back up the database before exporting to avoid potential data loss. Additionally, data stored in Black Studio TinyMCE Visual Editor widgets may be lost when exporting the database in this manner.
