The first major decision you make in Dragon Age: The Veilguard with significant consequences sees you choose whether to defend Minrathous with Neve or Treviso with Lucanis. If you choose Treviso, you get the quest On Deadly Wings, where you fight your first dragon of the game: Corius the Icetalon.
Since Corius is an ice dragon, it is weak to Fire damage, so Davrin should be in your team alongside Lucanis. It seems impossible to defeat Corius, since you're way under levelled for this fight. And, really, it is - but there's more than one way to skin at dragon, so the way you complete this mission is not quite how you expect.
When you first fight Corius the Icetalon, you may notice your attacks do very little. You're dishing out minimum damage, and taking hits that almost knock out out whenever Corius lashes out. But you need to realise that this is not a traditional fight. You're not just trying to whittle down its health bar before it does the same to you. You will only need to get Corius' health down by a third before a cutscene ends the quest as the dragon flies off, wounded.
Of course, at your current level, getting it to tow-thirds health is still an issue. When fighting Corius, you should keep your distance. Warriors get the raw end of the deal here, as they like to rush in, but even with their added tankiness, Corius will wreck you. Stay back, dodge its attacks, and rely on Davrin's Fire damage detonated by Lucanis' abilities. If you have Fire Abilities, or any that offer good area control, use them here.
Corius' legs will glow purple when they are vulnerable, and this is where to attack - see our Weakpoints guide for more information on how that works. In short, it's extra damage. However, if you stay there for more than a couple of seconds, the legs kick you away and drain your health in an instant. So rush in and out, taking aim from afar.
These attacks Stagger Corius (which we have another deeper dive on), which will make it collapse. At this point, its underbelly glows purple and becomes the new Weakpoint. Use your hardest hitting Ability and Charged Heavy attacks while it's vulnerable. With a bit of luck and clever use of the Davrin/Lucanis combo, you should only need to Stagger it once (at least on the standard Adventurer difficulty) to cause enough damage that the fight is called to a close.
Of course, that won't be the last you've seen of it. Next time around, you'll have a little more fight in you, and it won't take quite so long to whittle it down. If you're curious about what might have happened in another life, you would have fought Seartooth Vyrantus, a Fire dragon, had you gone with Neve to Minrathous. But again, that won't be the last you hear of that one, either. Happy hunting.
