The map slowly expands and becomes more open in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. After a few hours of linear quest completion, you get access to larger open areas to explore, find loot in, and tick off side quests.
While exploring early on, you'll notice that some areas are blocked off by mysterious white walls. You're able to see that there's stuff to see on the other side, but you're not able to get past. All you're given is a vague message saying you're not able to progress here. The assumption is that you need a specific skill to clear them, but the answer is actually a lot more simple than that.
The first white wall you'll come across is in the open area where the first fast travel beacon is in Arlathan Forest. If you head towards the opening just next to the beacon, you'll see the white wall covering an archway.
However, you don't need a skill to clear the white wall, as the message on it would suggest. You simply need to progress the main story far enough to unlock additional exploration.
After some more story quests, you'll be informed on screen that 'more exploration opportunities are available', which means new areas in locations have opened up for you. This means some white walls have been removed and you can now look for new chests, altars, and side quests.
All you need to do is head back to the location where you were stopped by the white walls and see if you now have access. The white walls don't all clear at the same time, with exploration expanding at various points throughout the story, so you may have to keep checking back to see if you have access. Normally, the exploration for a specific location opens up once you've finished a main quest in that specific location, so keep an eye on the notifications once you finish each quest.
