The Shiba Inu lead developer revealed this in a lengthy X thread published yesterday. New Scam Tactic In the thread, Kusama said he usually follows
Shiba Inu’s lead developer Shytoshi Kusama has revealed a new scam tactic being employed by fraudsters, exploiting his interactions with the SHIB community on X.
According to Kusama, scammers have noticed that he follows a number of X accounts belonging to some SHIB enthusiasts to keep up with the happenings within the community.
Now, these fraudsters reach out to some of the users and offer them up to 1 ETH to purchase these accounts, which are followed by Kusama. Once they acquire these accounts, the scammers begin using them to promote fake tokens, especially TREAT, which is gearing up for its launch.
"They (scammer) buy the accounts I follow, then use them to promote fake TREAT tokens, which have cute girl avatars to give the TREAT tokens more legitimacy. Only trust official channels."
Highlighting this scam tactic, Kusama expressed his frustration with the development and encouraged the community to stick to official channels for reliable information.
"This is getting out of hand & making me personally engage in the TREAT token discussion both privately & publicly so all key opinion leaders (KOLs) within the Shiba Inu ecosystem are fully briefed."
Moreover, he stated that the team is close to launching the Karma and Reputation system, which is tied to the DAO governance. According to Kusama, the system will provide a transparent record of users' reputations.
"We are very close to launching the Karma and Reputation system, which will be tied to the DAO governance. It will show a clear history of a member's reputation within our community, exposing bad actors & rewarding good behavior."
"This initiative will also be used to make the Shiba Inu ecosystem a trustworthy hub for developers, boosting its credibility within the Web3 space."
Continuously Warning Against Scams
Over the past year, scammers have employed various tactics to scam unsuspecting members of the Shiba Inu community, ranging from promoting fake airdrops relating to Shiba Inu ecosystem tokens to creating counterfeit versions of existing and upcoming tokens.
These bad actors promote their illicit activities by impersonating some prominent Shiba Inu ecosystem team members, like Kusama. The recent trend involves purchasing accounts that Kusama follows on X to promote fake tokens.
Interestingly, the Shiba Inu ecosystem team has continued to expose these scam tactics to keep users safe. The team has consistently warned that the TREAT token has not been launched into the market. Therefore, any TREAT token claiming affiliations with the Shiba Inu project is fake.
