Create an Online Radio with the Radio Browser API

Nov 04, 2024 am 02:20 AM

As a web developer with a passion for music, I recently worked on an online radio project using the Radio Browser API: https://api.radio-browser.info/. This project allowed me to design a dynamic interface that allows users to discover radio stations from around the world, choosing from a wide variety of genres, languages and countries. Here is an overview of the creation stages, the challenges encountered and the user experience I wanted to offer.

What is Radio Browser API?

The Radio Browser API is an open API that provides access to a database of radio stations. It offers a lot of information such as station name, language, country, music genre and much more. This API is very comprehensive and offers search and filtering functionalities, allowing searches to be refined according to user preferences.

Technologies Used

For this project, I used the following technologies:

React: for a responsive and interactive user interface.
JavaScript: for managing logic and API calls.
CSS: for a responsive and attractive interface, adaptable to all devices.

Application Features

Here are the main features that I integrated into the application:

Search by Genre: Using API settings, users can filter stations based on their music preferences.
Live Radio Playback: Once the station is chosen, simply click to listen live.
Intuitive interface: I focused on a fluid and simple user interface so that everyone can navigate and find their music quickly.

Challenges and Solutions

One of the major challenges was managing latency during API calls, especially with a large number of results. I optimized this by using pagination and displaying a loading animation to improve the user experience.

Another challenge concerned the compatibility of radio streams with all browsers. Some formats are not universally supported, which pushed me to find solutions for converting feeds where possible.

User Experience

I wanted to offer a simple, fast and accessible application to everyone. With just a few clicks, users can find radio stations that match their tastes and listen to them without any interruptions. The addition of the "Favorites" functionality also makes it easy to return to favorite stations.
