How to Store iPhone Emojis in MySQL Databases?

Storing iPhone Emoticons in MySQL Tables

Integrating iPhone emojis into MySQL databases can pose challenges, especially when the inserted values appear as blank after execution. This issue stems from the fact that MySQL versions prior to 5.5 only support UTF-8 for the Basic Multilingual Plane (BMP), excluding characters like emojis that reside outside this range.

Solution: Upgrading to utf8mb4 Encoding

MySQL versions 5.5 and above offer support for utf8mb4, an actual UTF-8 encoding, which allows for the storage of characters beyond the BMP. By using utf8mb4 as the character set for the text field and ensuring that PHP uses the same encoding for connection, the emoticons will be correctly stored.

Alternative Solution: BLOB Column Type

If you are using MySQL versions below 5.5, you can consider using a BLOB (Binary Large OBject) column type. BLOBs store raw bytes without considering the characters within, providing the flexibility to hold emoji data. However, BLOBs have the disadvantage of limiting efficient searching and indexing of the text.
