How to Accurately Get Click Coordinates Relative to an Element in jQuery?

Getting Click Coordinates on Target Element with jQuery

When handling click events on HTML elements using jQuery, one might encounter incorrect results when attempting to find the mouse position relative to the element. This could be due to a misunderstanding of the available jQuery methods.

event.pageX and event.pageY

These properties provide the mouse position relative to the document. They are not specific to the target element.

offset()

This method gives the offset position of an element relative to its parent. It is commonly used to determine the element's position on the page, but it does not give the mouse position relative to the element itself.

position()

Unlike offset(), this method gives the relative position of an element with respect to its immediate parent. It is useful for getting the position of an element inside an inner container.

Example

To demonstrate the difference between these methods, consider the following HTML:

<div>
Copy after login

And the following JavaScript event handler:

jQuery("#seek-bar").click(function(e) {
  // Incorrectly uses offset()
  var x = e.pageX - jQuery(this).offset().left;
  console.log(x);

  // Correctly uses position()
  var x = e.pageX - jQuery(this).position().left;
  console.log(x);
});
Copy after login

When clicking on the #seek-bar, you will notice that the first console log produces incorrect results because it uses offset(), which gives the absolute position of the element on the page. The second console log, however, provides the correct mouse position relative to the element by using position().
