How to Extract Only the Date from a Python Datetime Object?

Converting Datetime Object to String (Date Only) in Python

Converting a datetime object to a string representation is a common task in Python. However, the reverse operation, converting a datetime object to a string containing only the date, can sometimes be trickier.

Problem:

We have a datetime object:

datetime.datetime(2012, 2, 23, 0, 0)
Copy after login

and we want to convert it to a string like '2/23/2012', representing the date only.

Solution:

To achieve this, we can utilize the strftime method of the datetime object. The strftime method formats the datetime object according to a specified format string.

To format the date only, we use the following format string:

'%m/%d/%Y'
Copy after login

Where:

  • '%m' represents the month as a two-digit number (01-12)
  • '%d' represents the day of the month as a two-digit number (01-31)
  • '%Y' represents the year as a four-digit number (e.g., 2012)

By applying the strftime method with the appropriate format string, we can extract the date as a string:

import datetime

t = datetime.datetime(2012, 2, 23, 0, 0)
date_string = t.strftime('%m/%d/%Y')
Copy after login

This will result in:

'02/23/2012'
Copy after login

For additional formatting options, refer to the documentation on strftime.
