How Can I Customize the Appearance of a JavaFX Progress Bar?

Styling JavaFX Progress Bar

Introduction

Customizing the appearance of UI components enhances the user experience and aligns them with the application's aesthetics. This article addresses the customization of the JavaFX ProgressBar component.

Setting the Progress Bar Color

Use the -fx-background-color property to define the color of the progress bar. The inner bar can be colored using the -fx-accent property.

.progress-bar {
    -fx-background-color: lightblue;
    -fx-accent: red;
}
Copy after login

Setting the Progress Bar Background Color

To set the background color of the progress bar separately from its primary color, use the -fx-control-inner-background property.

.progress-bar > .track {
    -fx-control-inner-background: lightgray;
}
Copy after login

Adding Custom Text on Top of the Progress Bar

To add a text node on top of the progress bar, create a custom Label and position it absolutely over the bar.

Label progressText = new Label("Progress: 50%");
progressText.setLayoutX(getProgressBar().getLayoutX() + getProgressBar().getWidth() / 2);
progressText.setLayoutY(getProgressBar().getLayoutY() + 2);
Copy after login

Additional Customizations

Changing Progress Bar Height

.progress-bar .bar {
    -fx-padding: 1px;
    -fx-background-insets: 0;
}
Copy after login

CSS Class Names and Commands

CSS class names and commands for the ProgressBar component are available in the JavaFX default style sheet, e.g., modena.css (Java 8) or caspian.css (Java 7).
