The news was first reported by Punchbowl News and the Wall Street Journal on Friday.
Lutnick is a longtime friend of President Trump and has hosted many fundraisers for him.
He was previously considered for the role of Treasury secretary, but the competition for that role was said to be tough, with candidates including Scott Bessent also being considered.
If confirmed, Lutnick's job as Commerce secretary will involve representing American businesses in the President's cabinet and contributing to fueling economic growth and development.
