Why Aren't My Session Cookies Being Deleted in Chrome?

Session Cookies Not Deleted in Chrome

Chrome has been observed to retain session cookies even after the browser is closed and relaunched. This behavior is inconsistent with other browsers like Firefox and Opera, which adhere to the convention of deleting session cookies upon browser exit.

Cause

The issue arises due to Chrome's "Continue where you left off" setting. When this option is enabled, Chrome retains website and session data across browser sessions, including session cookies.

Solution

To ensure session cookies are deleted upon browser exit, disable the "Continue where you left off" setting in Chrome:

  1. Click the Chrome menu icon (three dots) in the upper right corner.
  2. Select "Settings".
  3. Scroll down and click "Advanced".
  4. Under "Privacy and security", uncheck the "Continue where you left off" box.

Additional Information

  • This behavior has been reported in a bug report to Chromium.
  • You can track the progress of the issue in the Chromium Issue Tracker.
  • For further reading, refer to the links provided in the issue report.
