Dragon Quest 3 Remake has a humourous number of pirates. You have fears of pirates in every port town, a dedicated Pirate's Den far away from civilization, and even a whole ship full of them. They're all ghosts, mind you, but a pirate's life extends even to the afterlife.
This Ghost Ship is home to a tragic tale of lost lovers, far from the barbarous tales being spread around the world. Finding this ship in the first place is a bit of a hassle, and you don't want to miss the numerous treasures hidden aboard. As you'd expect from a pirate ship.
While you can hear tell of a Ghost Ship sailing the seas of the world fairly early in the game, including at the Pirate's Den, it doesn't appear until you've met some specific requirements. Specifically, you have to hold a bone of one of the deceased crew members. Grim.
To this end, you need to complete the questline in Manoza City to acquire the Mod Rod. This can be given to an old man in the solitary hut in Grimland, who will in turn offer you up the Boatman's Bone. At this point, the Ghost Ship will appear in the world.
Helpfully, it also appears on the world map, saving you from actually searching for it. Despite rumours of it sailing, it is actually moored in the bay south of Romaria, so you can just fast travel there and sail south to find the Ghost Ship. Prepare for boarding.
If you've been to Olivia's Promontory since gaining the Ultimate Key, you can speak to a bard who will sing you the tale of Olivia and her lover lost at sea. The statues at Olivia's Promontory are powered by her lingering spirit, and she could be laid to rest with a memory of her lover's adoration.
This is what you're looking for on the Ghost Ship. The ship isn't exceedingly large, though it is still filled with enemies (no pirates though, funny enough), so keep wary. Head below deck from any of the multiple sets of stairs.
The Lover's Locket is found in the south section of the ship (the aft, for those of you nautically-inclined), and is inside a small box on the floor beside a white sheet. That's literally all you need from the Ghost Ship to lay Olivia and her lover to rest. You can leave now if you want.
You are on a pirate ship though, and you would be remiss not to plunder it for all the loot it contains. Let's start from the top deck and work our way below deck to find every item there is hiding on the Ghost Ship.
Item |
Floor |
Directions |
---|---|---|
Squidzilla | Deck | Right at the bow of the ship by a statue. |
Fading Jenny | Deck | To the right of the bow of the ship in a barrel. |
Poison Needle | B1 | In the lower-centre chest in the room on the starboard side of the ship. |
Mini Medal | B1 | In a barrel in the room on the starboard side of the ship. |
Cower Ring | B1 | In the upper-right chest in the room on the starboard side of the ship. |
Moonwort Bulb | B1 | In the upper-centre chest in the room on the starboard side of the ship. |
Sizeable Scissors | B1 | In the upper-left chest in the room on the starboard side of the ship. |
Walking Corpse (Monster) | B1 | On the northern starboard side of the ship by one of the oars. |
Garter | B1 | In the room at the very centre of the ship that connects to the aft. |
With the Lover's Locket in hand, you can return to Olivia's Promontory, and sail towards the two massive statues that previously pushed away any approach. This time, the Lover's Locket will glow, calling forth the spirit of Olivia, reuniting her with her lover, and removing the barrier between the statues. Sail on in.
In the centre of this lake is the Shrine of Shackles, where you will find the Mountaincleaver. Travel down through the shrine until you encounter the spirit of Simão. He will recount his time around Ortega, as well as the transformation of the King of Manoza, before revealing the location of Mountaincleaver, his beloved sword. It is found in the adjacent cell, and only appears after witnessing his memories.
With this sword in hand, you can now head to Mt. Necrogond and unlock the path to Baramos.
You can also use Mountaincleaver as a weapon until this point, so enjoy it while you can.
