Why Do My Sticky Table Headers Lose Their Borders, and How Can I Fix It?

Border styles disappear on sticky table headers

When attempting to style the borders of a table header with the position: sticky attribute, you may encounter an issue where the borders vanish. This issue stems from the use of border-collapse: collapse.

In CSS, the border-collapse property determines how adjacent table borders should interact. When border-collapse is set to collapse, borders between cells are removed, creating the appearance that a single border surrounds all adjacent elements.

In this case, the use of border-collapse: collapse can interfere with the desired effect of position: sticky. When borders collapse, the top and bottom borders on the tags bleed into the surrounding elements, including the table (

) itself and the following row ().

To resolve this issue, you can use border-collapse: separate in conjunction with carefully crafted border styles to achieve the desired effect. Here are some revised CSS rules that will keep the borders intact and fixed in place:

/* Reset border collapse to separate */
border-collapse: separate;

/* Apply both top and bottom borders to the <th> */
table th {
  border-top: 2px solid;
  border-bottom: 2px solid;
  border-right: 2px solid;
}

/* For cells, apply the border to one side only */
table td {
  border-bottom: 2px solid;
  border-right: 2px solid;
}

/* Apply a left border on the first <td> or <th> in a row */
table th:first-child,
table td:first-child {
  border-left: 2px solid;
}
Copy after login

With these modifications, the borders will attach properly to the table header (

) elements, remain fixed while scrolling, and retain a collapsed appearance.
