Why Doesn't `object-fit` Work Correctly with Images Inside Flexbox Containers?

Why Isn't object-fit Working in Flexbox?

When attempting to apply the object-fit: cover property to images within flexbox columns, users may encounter the issue of images not resizing as expected. The explanation lies in the specifications of the object-fit property.

According to the CSS specifications, object-fit determines the fitting of replaced element content within the box established by its used height and width. In the case of images, the replaced element is the image itself, not its container. Therefore, the object-fit property applies to the image's own height and width, rather than the flex item's dimensions.

Solution:

To overcome this issue, restructure the flexbox setup such that the images themselves become the flex items. This allows the object-fit property to be effectively applied to the images, resulting in the desired resizing behavior.

.container {
  display: flex;
  flex-direction: row;
  width: 100%;
}

img {
  object-fit: cover;
  flex: 1;
  margin-right: 1rem;
  overflow: hidden;
  height: 400px;
}
Copy after login
<div class="container">
  <img src="http://placehold.it/1920x1080">
  <img src="http://placehold.it/1920x1080">
  <img src="http://placehold.it/1920x1080">
  <img src="http://placehold.it/1920x1080">
</div>
Copy after login

By making the images the flex items, the object-fit property can now properly fit the images within the allocated flex container space, resulting in the desired cover sizing behavior.
