Why Aren't CSS Grid Named Areas Enclosed in Quotes?

Why Named Grid Areas in CSS Are Not in Quotes

In CSS Grid, named grid areas are accessed via IDs without quotes. This may seem odd since named grid areas are specified with quotes in grid: "area1 area2" / 1fr 1fr;.

Reason for Identifier Use

CSS Grid's developers chose to use identifiers instead of strings for consistency with the rest of CSS. The majority of CSS properties use identifiers for value specification, including display, font-weight, and justify-content. By using identifiers for named grid areas, the CSS spec maintains uniformity.

Identifiers vs Strings

Identifiers are author-defined sequences of characters that are not misinterpreted as keywords. They are case-sensitive and must be unquoted.

Strings, on the other hand, are sequences of characters delimited by quotes (either single or double). They correspond to the production in the CSS Syntax Module.

Example

In the following example, .logo's grid-area assigns the area name "logo" as an identifier instead of a string:

.grid {
  display: grid;
  grid-template-areas: "logo  nav  nav"
                        "content  content  content"
                        "footer footer  footer";
}

.logo {
  grid-area: logo;
}
Copy after login

Conclusion

While the use of identifiers for named grid areas may initially seem counterintuitive, it was chosen by the CSS Grid spec developers for the sake of consistency with the vast majority of CSS properties. This decision maintains a uniform syntax, ensuring a smoother learning curve for developers.
