With dozens of heroes and villains to pick from, you can engage in epic skirmishes using magic, technology or straight-up superpowers to secure your objectives.

Marvel Rivals: Thor Hero Guide

One of the available picks is none other than Thor Odinson, wielder of the Mjörnir and God of Thunder. With his unshakable will to defend his homeland and his divine hammer in hand, he's always eager to jump into combat, relentlessly crushing down on his enemies.

Thor Overview in Marvel Rivals

Marvel Rivals: Thor Hero Guide

As one of the game's Vanguard characters, Thor thrives by finding opportunities to engage the enemy team and take out their frailest targets. He has a lot of Health and won't go down without a fight, while also dealing some more-than-decent damage himself. His kit also has lots of tools to cause havoc and make him feel nearly invincible. Fitting for a God.

With access to enhanced Normal Attacks, Bonus Health and lots of mobility, he can easily start combat by himself, creating tons of opportunities for his allies to secure kills and objectives. But be careful not to recklessly throw yourself at enemies, or your lightning quickly becomes a spark before vanishing!

Ability

Description

Mjörlnir Bash Thor uses his Mjörlnir hammer to strike his enemies at a short range, dealing damage and charging Thorforce with each hit.
Hammer Throw Throws the Mjörlnir directly in front of Thor, hitting one target and returning afterward. Consumes 1 Thorforce stack and grants Thor 100 Bonus Health. The returning hammer deals less damage.
Lightning Realm Summons a small electric field around Thor, dealing small damage to all surrounding enemies and restoring 1 Thorforce per enemy hit. The field remains for 4 seconds and slows enemies that pass through it.
Storm Surge Spins the Mjörlnir and jumps in the aimed direction. If changed, it deals more damage and the leap goes further. Consumes 1 Thorforce stack and grants Thor 100 Bonus Health. Knocks back enemies on hit.
Awakening Rune Thor enters the Awakened state, floating slightly above the ground, dealing damage to nearby enemies, and changing his Basic Attacks for electric discharges that deal damage. The enhanced Basic Attacks are stronger than hammer strikes and hit much faster. Consumes 3 Thorforce stack and grants Thor 200 Bonus Health. Thor cannot use his other abilities while in the Awakened state. Lasts for 5 seconds.
God of Thunder Thor ascends into the air and starts changing his hammer. He creates a field of energy directly below him, damaging enemies that stand on it. After 1.5 seconds, he crashes directly into the field, dealing damage to enemies inside it. You can control Thor while he's ascending to choose where you'll land, and can also go upward or downward.
Thorforce Thor can hold up to 3 stacks of Thorforce and regenerates a stack every 5 seconds. Thorforce is used to execute certain abilities of his kit and grant Thor some Bonus Health. The maximum Bonus Health he can get is 200. Hitting enemies with Mjörlnir Bash or Lightning Realm charges Thorforce.
Odinson Reborn If Hela scores a kill, she immediately revives Thor and Loki where they were last slain. If they are alive, they get 50 Bonus Health instead.
Thunderous Deity Thor grants Storm and Captain Americaan Electrifying Enhancement, modifying their kits. Storm gains access to a skill that launches lightning barrages on her targets and bounces on them, while Captain America gets bonus Movement Speed and his Flying Shield deals extra lightning damage to enemies when thrown.

His gameplay revolves around Thorforce, his passive ability that automatically recharges over time. Most of his abilities consume Thorforce, granting him Bonus Health to resist the enemy team's charges. But he prefers to charge the enemy team himself, constantly getting Bonus Health to become almost invincible while hammering the opponent's Strategists and Duelists down.

With a straightforward kit, lots of mobility, and powerful strikes, he's a great choice for players looking for a Vanguard to learn, as he works incredibly well with various characters. His Storm Surge can be used to attack, defend or even to run if needed, and his Awakened stage can melt even other Vanguards if they're caught by surprise by the God of Thunder's might.

Recommended Teams

Thor does fairly well with the majority of the cast, but having dedicated healers such as Luna Snow makes his life much easier. He can charge into the enemy formation without a care in the world, and Luna will be able to heal him even if he's far away from her. She can also help in his rampage with Ice Arts, simultaneously healing him and hitting enemies.

His passive synergies cannot be understated, though. A Thor-Captain America duo Vanguard charge is a force to be reckoned with. Giving extra Movement Speed to Cap is much stronger than it seems, not to mention the extra damage he gets. He's generally a good pick against many compositions, given how easily he can join the fray with Storm Surge.

How To Play As Thor In Marvel Rivals

Marvel Rivals: Thor Hero Guide

While Thor loves to throw himself into a good brawl, it's important to know when it's the right time to do it. Charging Storm Surge and jumping in a pack of six will likely get you killed before you can react. Engaging a fight is often your main responsibility, but you need some set-up for that.

Thor Combos In Marvel Rivals

  • Hammer Throw > Storm Surge > Lightning Realm > Mjölnir Bash > Awakening Rune > Mjölnir Bash (enhanced)
  • Storm Surge > Lightning Realm > Mjölnir Bash > Hammer Throw > Mjölnir Bash > Awakening Rune > Mjölnir Bash (enhanced)
  • Hammer Throw > Storm Surge > Lightning Realm > God of Thunder > Awakening Rune > Mjölnir Bash (enhanced)

Hitting a Hammer Throw before setting up a Storm Surge is the most basic combo for Thor. This ensures you'll have Extra Health before you leap, giving you better survivability. Immediately follow up with Lightning Realm to recharge your Thorforce stacks, and start bashing enemies to finish charging your passive if needed. Finally, use Awakening Rune to refresh your Bonus Health and smite down your enemies.

Thorforce skills all enter a shared 2s cooldown after you use any of them. Use this downtime to quickly recharge your passive with hammer strikes.

More often than not, you'll need to simply jump on a target ASAP. Starting with Storm Surge is fine, especially if you're jumping on someone who's attacking your allies. The knockback on Thor's jump is incredibly great for protecting your team, so learn how to use it defensively too.

Hammer Throw can be a bit awkward to use when you're already on melee range. However, you can animation-cancel your Normal Attacks with it, making for a quick "burst" to finish off-targets.

Awakening Rune is your most powerful ability by far, but don't be reckless in this state. You can still be killed in it, and the Thorforce cooldown starts after the state ends, so you'll be vulnerable for a few seconds. However, the wreckage you bring is worth the risk.

When To Use God Of Thunder

Marvel Rivals: Thor Hero Guide

Thor's Ultimate Skill is a classic superhero landing with devastating power. However, it leaves you open to hits on air while you channel it, and you won't get Bonus Health for using it. To remedy this, you can use Thorforce skills before using your Ult, ensuring you'll be protected from a few hits.

As it has a very obvious animation and a loud quote, God of Thunder is best used against busy groups of enemies, making it harder for them to walk away. Enemies inside the electric field take constant damage while you're airborne, so try to squeeze that extra damage as much as you can.

You can also use the God of Thunder to surprise enemies from above. Head to the highest point you can and enter battle by immediately using it, catching them unaware, and quickly following up with a Lightning Realm > Awakening Rune combo to finish them off.
