There is a lot you can do in I Am Future. Your main goal is to survive, which means you need to eat, craft useful items, and even send your drone on expeditions. It’s a blend of both technological and primitive things, because the game is set in a not-so-distant future, where nature has taken over civilization.
No matter what you do, technology won’t feed you, and for that, one of the oldest hunting methods—fishing—will be essential. Although fishing is an ancient practice, there are some things you need to know about fishing in the game.
The first thing you need for fishing is a suitable fishing spot. There are two locations in the game where you can fish—one is accessible relatively early on, while the other may be harder to reach initially.
You need to click on the chair at the fishing locations to catch fish.
Finding a fishing spot isn’t enough; you’ll also need a fishing rod to start catching fish. Fortunately, you’ll find your first rod in the initial fishing area. After acquiring it, you’ll have the option to upgrade the rod twice later on. Remember that you must have the rod in your inventory to be able to fish.
Once you have the rod, nothing stands in your way to start fishing. Although you can choose a bait, it’s not absolutely necessary. The type of fish you’ll catch depends on the fishing location, the rod you’re using, and the bait you select. The game’s interface will show the possible catches for your current setup.
Finally, while fishing, you’ll see your bait shake, and when you click once, a mini-game will start. In this mini-game, a pointer on a dial rotates clockwise, and you need to time your Clicks so that the pointer aligns with the white sections on the dial. The number of white sections will vary depending on the type of fish you’re trying to catch.
Failing the mini-game will mean you don’t catch anything, and regardless of the outcome, you will lose the bait you used.
There are two fishing spots in the game. The first is on the Base Rooftop, where you start the game. On your first night, after removing the leech from Earl, the talking fridge, you’ll need to pull an Infected Weed out of the ground. This action will give you the StopWeed Spray.
Then, look for another leech on the door above Earl’s area; after spraying it, you’ll gain access to the elevator behind the door. This elevator will take you to the docks, your first fishing area.
At the docks, you’ll find the Handmade Rod, your initial fishing rod.
The second fishing spot is on the Hotel Rooftop. Reaching it will take some time because you’ll need to complete the bridge construction. Once the bridge is finished, you can access the Hotel Rooftop and fish there.
Additionally, you’ll find the Strong Fishing Line in a package at the fishing spot on the Hotel Rooftop, which is needed to upgrade your rod.
After obtaining the Handmade Rod, you can upgrade it a total of two times. Upgrading your rod will increase the variety of fish you can catch. Here’s a list of all rods and the materials needed for each upgrade:
|
Required Materials | How To Obtain Required Materials | ||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

While you'll usually need bait for fishing, remember that fishing without bait is also possible. However, fishing without bait often results in catching junk. Still, in times of material scarcity, baitless fishing can sometimes work to your advantage. The table below lists all available baits and how to obtain them:
|
How To Obtain | ||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Mollusk Bait | You can craft the Mollusk Bait at the Workbench using Biomass. For each 1 Biomass, you can craft 1 Mollusk Bait. | ||||||||||||
Clam | Clam is a bait you can obtain only through fishing. If you fish without using any bait at the first fishing area, the Docks, you have a chance of catching a Clam. Alternatively, if you fish at any fishing spot using the Mollusk Bait, you will definitely catch a Clam. | ||||||||||||
Earthworm | You can only obtain Earthworms by harvesting plants from Garden Beds, with a chance of finding them each time you collect. | ||||||||||||
Spoon Lure | You can craft the Spoon Lure using the Workbench. To craft one Spoon Lure, you will need a total of three Plastics. | ||||||||||||
Leech Tail | You can obtain Leech Tail by removing Infected Weeds or by killing Leeches. |
You can chop the fish you catch using the Filleting Fish menu on the left side of the Campfire to obtain food-related items or other materials.
Keep in mind that the fish you catch depends on which bait you use, where you are fishing, and which rod you are using. Below is a table of all the fish you can catch:
