How can I left-pad numbers with leading zeros in PHP?

Left Padding Numbers with Leading Zeros

When iterating through an array of single-digit and two-digit numbers, it may be necessary to display all values as two-digit numbers for consistency. To achieve this, we can "left pad" the single-digit numbers with leading zeros.

In PHP, the sprintf function provides a convenient way to pad strings with zeros. The syntax of sprintf is sprintf(format, arguments), where the format string specifies the formatting to be applied to the arguments.

To left pad a string with zeros, we can use the d format, where %0 specifies that the value should be zero-padded, and 2 specifies the minimum width of the string.

For example, the following code will pad the numbers 1 through 9 with leading zeros:

foreach (range(1, 12) as $month) {
  $formattedMonth = sprintf("%02d", $month);
  echo "<option value=\"$formattedMonth\">$formattedMonth</option>";
}
Copy after login

This code will produce the following HTML output:

<option value="01">01</option>
<option value="02">02</option>
<option value="03">03</option>
<option value="04">04</option>
<option value="05">05</option>
<option value="06">06</option>
<option value="07">07</option>
<option value="08">08</option>
<option value="09">09</option>
<option value="10">10</option>
<option value="11">11</option>
<option value="12">12</option>
Copy after login

Two-digit numbers will remain unchanged, while single-digit numbers will be padded with a leading 0.
