How Can I Efficiently Find the Position of an Element in a Go Slice?

Determining Element Position Within a Slice

Determining an element's position within a slice is not as straightforward as it may seem. This is due to Go's lack of a generic library function for this purpose.

To address this, custom functions like the one below can be created:

type intSlice []int

func (slice intSlice) pos(value int) int {
    for p, v := range slice {
        if (v == value) {
            return p
        }
    }
    return -1
}
Copy after login

This function iterates through the slice using range and checks if the element's value matches the target value. If a match is found, the index is returned.

Unfortunately, this approach is not ideal for arbitrary slices. Go's type system does not provide a straightforward mechanism for functions to operate on slices of different types.

For byte slices specifically, the bytes.IndexByte function can be employed. This function returns the index of the first occurrence of a byte value within a byte slice.
