The main character of the diorama-focused Fantasian Neo Dimension, Leo is a piece of the party you'll almost never be left without. From the very first encounter in the Machine World, to the final battle at the end of the game, Leo is the one guaranteed member you'll be forced to grow accustomed to.

So it's probably worth your time getting to know his strengths and weaknesses. Being the protagonist, Leo is a fairly versatile character, especially once you hit Act 2 of the game, though he still has limitations to look out for. He's not beating many battles all by himself.

Leo's Role In Combat

Leo is something of a jack-of-all-trades. Because you have him from beginning to end, he also has to be mostly self-sufficient regardless of the party he's in, or lack thereof in some scenarios. As such, he doesn't specialise in too much, but can fit into just about any party composition.

Leo is the only character who can steal by default though, making him a valuable asset in getting rare items from enemies. And while he only has middling defence, he comparatively has quite high damage, while many of his weapons boost evasion. In that sense, he's more of a thief-style character who can avoid getting hit, but can still dole out impressive damage.

With both Lightning and Fire attacks, Leo can also cover a good portion of the elemental gamut without running into conflicting elements. With both First Aid and Focus, he can also keep himself fighting indefinitely. In fact, with some buffs from allies, Leo can end up being one of the strongest attackers you have, especially once you throw Samidare into the mix.

Leo's Skills

Up until Act 2 of the game, Skills are learned by leveling up. For Leo, new skills stop being acquired around Level 27, with Act 2 on average beginning around Level 30. At that point, Leo can determine his own Skills.

Let's step back for a second though, and focus on the skills he'll have in the more linear Act 1:

Skill

Effect

Level It's Unlocked

Slash Pierces enemies in a straight line, dealing physical damage. Default
Analyse Scans an enemy to reveal their stats and weaknesses. Only needs to be done once per enemy. Level 2
Steal Gives a chance to steal an item from an enemy. Level 4
First Aid Heals a small amount of HP. Can be used on Leo and other party members. Level 5
Fire Slash Pierces enemies in a straight line, dealing fire damage. Level 7
Samidare Hits a single enemy multiple times for physical damage. Level 10
Helm Bash Hits a single enemy, reducing their defence. Level 13
Concentrate Raises Leo's chance of getting a critical hit for the next few turns. Level 21
Lightning Slash Pierces enemies in a straight line, dealing Lightning damage. Level 24
Focus Allows Leo to restore his own MP for free. Level 27

These skills form the bulk of Leo's moveset. The later-unlocked Growth Map lets him add some new Skills or upgrades to pre-existing ones, but you'll still be primarily basing Leo's builds on these base skills.

Leo's Growth Map

At the very end of Act 1, Leo acquires his Divine Artefact, the Gauntlet, and this in turn unlocks the Growth Map. For every level past 30 you acquire, you gain Skill Points that can be used to unlock skills from the Growth Map. Certain nodes are locked until finding certain items in some side quests, but the majority is open right from the beginning.

As stated earlier, the majority of these build upon Leo's existing moveset, though there are some brand-new skills in here too that can really amplify what Leo is already great at. Let's look at a few of them:

  • Fire and Lightning versions of Samidare can be unlocked, massively boosting the damage Leo can deal to certain enemies.
  • The number of hits in Samidare can also be increased, and this applies to the elemental versions as well.
  • Phantom is a new skill that massively raises Leo's evasion, making him almost impossible to hit.
  • Counter is a powerful passive skill, which has a chance of letting Leo using a regular attack on the last enemy that hit him without using up a turn.

Once a character unlocks the Growth Map, they also gain access to the Tension Gauge, which allows them to perform a massively powerful move unique to each character. For Leo, this is Solar Flare, and costs 10 SP to unlock. This deals fire damage to every enemy, and can be upgraded to give buffs to allies as well.

The Growth Map can also be Reset free-of-charge infinitely, letting you change your entire build whenever you need.
