Why Does My Image Have Extra White Space Below It?

Troubleshooting the Mysterious White Space Beneath an Image Tag

When resizing an image using an tag, you may encounter a perplexing gap beneath the image. Despite inspecting the code thoroughly, the source of this space remains elusive.

Understanding Baseline Alignment

The answer lies in the concept of baseline alignment in HTML. Inline elements, including tags, are aligned to the baseline, which accommodates characters that extend below the baseline, known as descenders. This ensures that text elements maintain a consistent vertical position.

Resolving the White Space

To resolve the white space caused by baseline alignment, consider the following solutions:

  • Apply Vertical-Align: Add vertical-align: bottom to the tag to align it at the bottom of the container, eliminating the gap.
  • Change Display Property: Convert the tag from inline to block-level (display: block) to remove baseline alignment.
  • Adjust Container Line-Height: Increase the line-height on the container to push the content down, creating enough space to accommodate the descenders.
  • Set Container Font-Size to 0: Assign font-size: 0 to the container to eliminate any space created by descenders. Optionally, reset the font size on the child element.

Additional Notes

  • This issue does not originate from margin or padding, making it difficult to identify using developer tools.
  • The gap results from the elevation of content due to baseline alignment.
  • Other inline elements (e.g., text, span) may also exhibit this behavior.
