The new year has arrived, and what better way to kick it off than with a remaster of the excellent Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana, a reimagining of the beloved Ys III, offering a more simplistic and straightforward experience compared to what you may be familiar with in Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana or Ys X: Nordics.
Still, what's here is a classic Ys experience that places Adol front and center, featuring fast-paced action, mystery, and that sweet exploration you expect from these titles. If you're a fan of the other Ys titles and never played this one, or love JRPGs and are looking for a shorter experience, this is for you!
While not rare for this series, it can be a bit surprising if you're coming from other JRPGs, as you only play as Adol in Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana and have no party members to utilize in combat. The good news about this, however, is that you only have to worry about upgrading Adol and his equipment, which is sort of a relieving feeling.
So, be prepared to get used to Adol's combat and abilities, as there is no one else you can fall back on or rely on during combat. It's not as bad as it sounds, as Adol will gain access to tremendously strong and fun abilities as you progress through the game; just stick with him a bit, and you will be rewarded with an engaging and rewarding combat system!
In addition to not having party members who can help you deal damage or even provide healing or buffs, you cannot manually heal Adol in Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana.
Instead of having items you can stock up on in your inventory and use during the heat of battle to replenish your health or give yourself unique buffs or bonuses, you will instead receive these items randomly when defeating enemies. The catch here is that you will automatically consume them when passing over them.
This can make the game substantially more challenging, especially boss encounters, as you cannot heal yourself during these battles. However, this will force you to learn their attack patterns and weaknesses, which lends itself well to this game's combat system.

Blue Vial | Raises Defense |
Yellow Vial | Raises MP Speed |

Raval Ore | Upgrade Material |
Landing hits on enemies will increase your EXP Rate with each successful hit, allowing you to build up large multipliers by constantly attacking enemies and keeping your Hit Combo climbing. Be sure to take advantage of this system as much as possible!
Every area in Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana will be packed full of secrets to find, enemies to defeat, and items to collect. While many of what you find will be Raval Ore, you can find other goodies, such as Gemstones for your Gauntlets, that will upgrade their power and make them much more viable in battle.
Additionally, you will also find rare items like Katol Elixirs that will increase Adol's max health, making them a godsend if you want to stay alive a bit longer in boss encounters (and, trust us, you will need them). You can also stumble across items that are required in order to complete specific side quests, which, in turn, will usually give you more Raval Ore, so you should always explore all nooks and crannies of an area before moving on to the next part!
Side quests are a critical aspect of Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana, especially if you want to upgrade your equipment. While you won't receive EXP for finishing side quests, you will usually obtain either Raval Ore or a unique item that will make completing them worth your time and effort.
Some of the more unique items can range from Accessories that allow you to see in the dark to ones that increase the duration of your Boost mode and much more. There also aren't an overwhelming amount of side quests in the game, so you should be able to knock them all out when progressing through the game.
However, it is essential to note that you can miss some side quests in the game, so we strongly urge you to check in on every character in Redmont Town after completing a substantial plot point, such as defeating a boss and completing a new area. Furthermore, don't forget to check other areas before progressing the story, as some NPCs might need help near Valestein Castle and the other surrounding areas!
As you progress through Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana, Adol will learn many useful abilities that will not only boost his combat prowess but will also enable him to explore new areas. This will drastically open up previously visited dungeons in a massive way, allowing you to reach areas you barely couldn't previously, allowing you to find secrets and valuable items.
Whenever you acquire a new Gauntlet or ability, you should consider revisiting old dungeons, as you will likely be able to obtain more Gemstones or a unique item that will enable you to complete a side quest. You can also get your hands on Katol Elixirs, which will help you out tremendously by boosting Adol's max HP!
Like we mentioned earlier, you only have to worry about Adol's equipment in this game, and what's even better news is the only upgrade material in the game is Raval Ore, which you will get boatloads of by simply playing the game, exploring the dungeons, and completing the side quests.
There will also be a point a bit later in your adventure where some enemies will begin dropping Raval Ore when defeated, so don't worry about running out of it. You will be swimming in it by the time you roll credits.
Gold is also required to purchase most of Adol's equipment, and you will need more to upgrade it, but you should have plenty of that, too, if you're constantly exploring and defeating enemies as you do it. Some side quests can also give you lots of Gold, so be sure to tackle them as well!
Speaking of defeating many enemies for Gold, you should farm them upon reaching a new area or dungeon, as your EXP gains are influenced by Adol's Level, the area he's in, and the enemies that inhabit it.
For example, the Tigray Quarry will begin giving you substantially less EXP the higher you level up, making farming the enemies there not worth it after you reach around Level 7 or 8. From here, you will get noticeably far less EXP, even with a high EXP Rate.
Once you notice your EXP slow down drastically, you are likely good to proceed to the dungeon's boss, as you are likely the proper Level to take them on. We also strongly recommend purchasing new equipment or fully upgrading your current set before fighting each new boss!
Lastly, we want to talk about the Consumables in Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana, as they are pretty rare but are very potent items in the game. As we mentioned earlier, none of these items will allow Adol to heal or apply buffs, but they can offer substantial benefits that you may overlook if you receive them and forget about them.
Although there are not many Consumables in the game, there are enough that will help you tremendously during your adventure, and we feel we must point out their uses and where you can obtain them!
