Valestein Castle is one of the final dungeons in Ys Memoire: The Oath In Felghana, and the biggest by far. It is a complex dungeon, and one that puts all of your tools and skills to the test.

It is also more non-linear than others, letting you tackle its bosses and find its key items in any order that you want. In turn, that makes it pretty easy to get lost, too. Our handy guide is here to bring you to victory and put an end to Count McGuire and Chester once and for all.

To The East And West Wings

Critical Path

After arriving at Valestein Castle, take a moment to chat with everyone outside, and then head on it. You will see a set of stairs ahead of you as well as the entrance to the next room. The stairs lead to another door, though this one is locked at the moment, so head into the lower one for now.

Proceed through the next two rooms, avoiding the spikes and carefully battling the rather powerful enemies. You will soon arrive in a large room with a thin path forward and swinging spiked balls, as well as two passages to the side. There's nothing to see down the sides, so head to the main path.

This path is covered in ice, so equip the Stone Shoes before going any further. These were acquired back in the Elderm Mountains, in case you missed them the first time around. Speed ahead now, jumping to avoid the spiked balls as necessary. With the Stone Shoes equipped, they're thankfully quite easy to avoid with some deft jumping.

This will lead you into a room with a spiral staircase going up and down, and exits to the left and right. To start with, let's head up the stairs. Carefully avoid the holes in between, and then use Double Jump and the Ventus Bracelet to cross the gap on to top floor to meet Count McGuire's wife and children. They will speak about the events at hand, and then give you the Ivory Key. This is a quest item for later in the dungeon.

You can walk back down the stairs if you want, but it's faster to just jump off and fall into the lowest level. Once you've reached the bottom, just follow the steps upwards to reach the middle of the spiral staircase area from earlier. Our options now are left and right. The right is somewhat limited at the moment, so take the exit to the left instead.

An unfortunate fact to bear in mind is that the game's save points call the West Wing the East Wing, and vice versa. We're using the actual directions for the sake of guidance

Optional Items

Ys Memoire: The Oath In Felghana - Valestein Castle Walkthrough

There aren't too many optional items in this section of the castle, though they're still worth the hassle. Here's where to find them:

Item

Location

Raval Ore x200 In the area with the swinging spiked balls, drop down from a broken ledge into an alcove with a chest.
Topaz While ascending the spiral staircase, drop down through one of the holes and use your double jump and Ventus Bracelet to reach the platform with the chest.

With how powerful so many of the enemies are in this dungeon, it helps to have as much Raval Ore as you can get. Try to save it though, as there's some great armour coming up ahead.

To The East Wing

Ys Memoire: The Oath In Felghana - Valestein Castle Walkthrough

Critical Path

After taking the left path, you'll now be in an area with many isolated platforms filled with enemies. A drop from any of these will bring you back to the bottom floor from earlier, meaning you'll have to start this room all over. So mind your step.

There is an Extra Function button in the options that lets you set No Fall, which has you reappear in the current area if you fall, if you're struggling with the platforming.

Jump out onto the platforms and follow them north until you can go no further, then go to the left and then south. Go left from here and then north again. At the fork, travel left. The path is linear from this point on, so follow it along until you reach the exit.

Double-Jump is all you should need to make all of these jumps, though have the Ventus Bracelet equipped for safety's sake. Head into the next room now, which will have our first new save point, and our first boss of the dungeon beyond that.

Optional Items

Ys Memoire: The Oath In Felghana - Valestein Castle Walkthrough

Like the previous section, there aren't oodles of goodies to find here, but they're even more valuable.

Item

Location

Battle Armour On the bottom floor of the stairs or when falling from above, climb the spiked section to reach this treasure chest.
Raval Ore x500 Before heading left to the fork, Double Jump with the Ventus Bracelet to the right to reach an off-screen platform with a chest.

The Battle Armour is the real star of the show here, though the Raval Ore will come in handy to upgrade it. Save at the East Wing save point and travel back to Redmont now to upgrade your equipment before the boss.

Beating Death Faleon

Ys Memoire: The Oath In Felghana - Valestein Castle Walkthrough

Death Faleon is our first boss of this dungeon, and he is thankfully not exceptionally difficult. He does have a unique system to how he is damaged however that is akin to the Ligaty boss from earlier.

Death Faleon changes colour throughout the fight, with each colour taking a certain type of damage while being immune to all others. Green is damaged by wind, red by fire, yellow by earth, and white by your sword. That's all really, the fight doesn't evolve beyond that nor does he gain any newe moves beyond what he intially has.

After he is beaten, you will be given the Organ Pipe, another quest item for later, as well as the notification that some doors have opened. Head on back to the circular staircase to go deeper.

To The West Wing

Ys Memoire: The Oath In Felghana - Valestein Castle Walkthrough

Critical Path

The two doors that have opened are one at the further end of the right side of the circular staircase, and the one above the stairs at the entrance. They both ultimately link up, so we'll be taking the one by the circular staircase since it's closer.

Head through this first room, which will lead to an exterior courtyard. There are two areas to choose from for now, a building in the centre and the open door to the left. We can't do much in the centre building at the moment, so continue left for now.

Proceed through this next linear area to arrive at yet another circular area with a staircase that goes up and down, and two doors to the right and south. The south door links back to the newly-opened entrance door, so this is irrelevant to us. The stairs both lead to optional items, so take the right exit now.

This area is extremely dark, but also has a lot of false platforms. Equip the Nightfire Gem you got from Aida earlier in the game to illuminate the area. This will also reveal which platforms are fake, so avoid these as you make your way across the area.

Even if you land on a false platform, you have a very small amount of time to jump off it, letting you still use them as effective platforms if you're fast enough.

This area is filled with enemies still, so be careful not to get shoved off the edge. Helpfully, the enemies don't seem to know where the false platforms are either so it's very easy to Make Them Jump to their deaths.

After getting all the way across, you will encounter the second save point of Castle Valestein, and the second boss is just south of it.

Optional Items

Ys Memoire: The Oath In Felghana - Valestein Castle Walkthrough

There are quite a few more optional items in this section of the castle, though the vast majority of them are Raval Ore.

Item

Location

Raval Ore x320 Take the east exit from the large icy area to a room with spikes. Climb the wall and use the Terra Bracelet to break the wall, revealing a chest.
Raval Ore x380 In the area with false platforms, immediately jump to the north-east to reach this chest. Be careful not to land on a false platform.
Battle Shield At the bottom of the stairs of the Circular area, climb the wall and break the cracked one with the Terra Bracelet to reveal a chest.
Raval Ore x250 After coming across this platform, jump to a higher section of the staircase and use the Ventus Bracelet and Double Jump to reach it and the chest.

Excusing the Battle Shield, giving us the second of three parts of our latest set of equipment. With all that Raval Ore, it might be a good idea to once again leave to upgrade it after you reach the West Wing save point.

Beating Zellfel Zam Schultiger

Ys Memoire: The Oath In Felghana - Valestein Castle Walkthrough

This wonderful dog is our next boss, and it all takes place in a side-scrolling area. They're not exceptionally complex, though the small size of the area definitely makes the battle quite a bit more difficult.

Their attacks invovle spewing a great stream of fire in one direction, which is best to avoid by being behind them. They can also perform a lunge that has them jumping above you, so it's best to keep to the floor to avoid this one. They can also perform a howl that summons smaller wolves. It's best to either double jump and Ventus Bracelet over them, or use the Terra Bracelet to negate the damage.

Their final attack has them curl into a wall and bounce around the arena. They do stop for a few seconds after this attack, giving you ample time to assault them. In every other scenario when you can't get close to them, fireballs are the way to go, as they'll even hit the boss when they're off-screen.

After they're defeated, they will drop the Holy Cross, the final quest item you need to proceed deeper into the castle.

To The Dungeon

Ys Memoire: The Oath In Felghana - Valestein Castle Walkthrough

Critical Path

Head back to exterior courtyard from earlier and enter the centre building, which is a chapel. On the floor is Elena's Silver Pendant. Pick this up to return to her later. Now head up to the organ and put each of the items we've acquired, the Ivory Key, Organ Pipe, and Holy Cross, to make a secret passage appear. This leads to the dungeon, so head in now.

This first area is linear, so simply follow the stairs downwards until you reach the next area. The dungeon is packed with new enemies though, and they're quite powerful so be on guard against them.

In the current area, follow the path until you reach a more open area, then head to the right. There will be a set of stairs, one going up and the other down. Take the one leading downwards. Speed through this next room to the right exit again, which will lead you to the final save point of Valestein Castle. You now have an exit to the north and the east.

The eastern exit leads to the Clock Tower, which we can't access right now, so head north instead. This is where the final boss of Valestein Castle is fought.

Optional Items

Ys Memoire: The Oath In Felghana - Valestein Castle Walkthrough

There is just a single optional item in the dungeons of Valestein Castle, being the smallest section of the area. Here's where to find it:

  • Battle Saber - aIn the large room, take the stairs upwards and climb the wall until you loop back to the previous area in a higher section. Jump across the falling platforms and you will reach a chest surrounded by Torieze enemies. The sword is inside.

This is the second most powerful sword in the game, so it's worth going back to upgrade once you find the next save point. It should already be an upgrade over your current sword, though. You'll have now completed the Battle set as well.

Beating Zirduros

Ys Memoire: The Oath In Felghana - Valestein Castle Walkthrough

Zirduros is the last defender of Valestein Castle, and they are humourously a robot. In a world seemingly devoid of guns and electricity, there is a robot. And Zirduros has everything you might expect of a robot, too.

Despite their advanced nature, they're nothing a sword and a bit of magic can't handle. Zirduros hits hard, though many of their attacks can be negated entirely with the Terra Bracelet. They can also only be attacked from behind, though rather beneficially they struggle to hit you with many of their attacks from behind, as well.

The Terra Bracelet is your best friend here as it lets you stay close to Zirduros without worrying about taking too much damage. Use the Double Boost as soon as it's available and you'll heal and deal absurd damage to them.

Once they're down, you'll be given the Clock Tower Key, and you'll get to free Elena and even Aida's supposedly dead grandson, Bob. A happy ending for everyone. Now to get ready for the penultimate dungeon of the game.
