Like its predecessors, Dynasty Warriors: Origins tells the story of the wars between the Three Kingdoms of ancient China. This time, though, your lone protagonist gets a chance to meet the movers and shakers of the crumbling Han Empire before finally deciding which leader to support in Chapter Three.
Choosing which hero you believe can unify the realm is a permanent decision for the campaign, and the game is sure to highlight each of their merits as you fight alongside them in the years leading up to the conflict. If you're out of time to decide and you're still unsure, here's everything you need to know.
Chapter Three picks up after the death of Dong Zhuo and the subsequent collapse of the Coalition. The Emperor is nominally restored to power, but the same old political maneuvering in the palace means nothing will really change unless something is done. As a Guardian of Peace, Ziluan must choose a hero capable of uniting the realm and ushering in a new era.
At the start of the chapter, visit the Shui Jing retreat to meet Pang Tong, then return to the inn and read your letters. You'll have invitations from all three factions asking you to support their endeavors. When you return to the World Map, you'll see a new status tracker in the top-left corner indicating how much you've contributed to each faction.
Each time you fight a story battle on the side of one of the three potential heroes - Cao Cao, Liu Bei, and Sun Jian - you'll gain a Contribution to their cause. Only a few Contributions are available for each faction at first, and they don't conflict with each other. On your first playthrough, it's a good idea to do all of the initial battles for each faction to get extra Proficiency, Trainings, and Bonds.
Once you've finished the first set of Contributions for one or more leaders, you can speak to that leader to progress the story. A new set of battles will become available.
You can only participate in battles past this point for leaders whose first set of Contributions you've completed. For example, if you complete Cao Cao's mission and both of Liu Bei's, but none of Sun Jian's, you will be able to fight for Cao Cao or Liu Bei in the upcoming Battle of Xu, but will only be able to side with Liu Bei when he fights Yuan Shu.
In the second half of Chapter Three, Liu Bei interferes with Cao Cao's invasion of Xu, and Sun Jian is forced by his liege Yuan Shu to fight Liu Bei. in both of these battles, you'll have to pick a side if you've been allying yourself to both parties. When you select the battlefield on the World Map, press left or right to choose which side you want to fight for.
Once you fight against a leader, they'll be your enemy for the rest of the game. By the end of the chapter, you'll have made enemies of two of the leaders, leaving only one to be your hero. Complete their remaining Contriobutions, and they'll approach you about joining their cause in a cutscene.
Each of the three choices are fairly evenly matched in terms of gameplay. Once you complete the game, you'll be able to revisit past decisions and allegiances, so eventually you can explore all three storylines. For your first playthrough, pick the hero you like the most, or whose retinue has characters you like.
If you're just looking to rush through the story and get to the endgame as quickly as possible, pick Liu Bei. He has slightly fewer missions than the other two leaders.
