However, achieving these endings demands speed, not just skill, so we strongly recommend playing on Historian difficulty. Otherwise, combat drags, hindering your ability to alter history as required.
Liu Bei's Shu true ending is the easiest to obtain. It involves altering only one mission, located near the game's conclusion, and is less reliant on strict timing than the other endings. While achievable without deliberate effort, specific steps are still necessary.
In Chapter Five, during the Battle of Changban, your initial objective is to escape with Liu Bei. This won't lead to the true ending. Continue until Cao Cao appears in a circular arena north of the map. To trigger the true ending, turn around and defeat Cao Cao's battalion. On Historian difficulty, Liu Bei survives as long as you defend the bridge from the initial wave of generals. This allows you to defend the bridge, then proceed north to engage Cao Cao (he appears a couple of minutes after Bailuan).
While focusing on Cao Cao himself is technically sufficient, clearing many enemies is necessary. A mix of area-of-effect and powerful single-target Battle Arts is crucial. Time is less critical here, but the mission concludes once Liu Bei escapes, so don't delay in defeating Cao Cao.
Defeating Cao Cao yields a "Fate Altered" message. Complete the battle by assisting Liu Bei's escape, then proceed through the next two battles normally to unlock the Shu true ending.
Sun Jian's Wu true ending is more complex than the Shu ending but simpler than the Wei ending. While three decisive battles exist, the third seemingly requires only completion after successfully navigating the first two. We completed the third mission normally and still obtained the true ending, unlike Cao Cao's path.
The first crucial moment occurs early, in Chapter Three's third battle, the Battle of Xiangyang. Here, you must rescue Sun Jian. The mission objective instructs you to abandon him, but ignoring this yields an instant mission success and alters history.
To achieve this, head south at the battle's start (on the path curving west), clearing enemies before accessing the base (defeating Pang Ji is required). Secure the base by defeating Wang Can and the generic general, then exit via the north gate. Immediately curve south on the westernmost path. You can ignore Zhang Yun, but defeating the Mighty General opens the next gate. Here, you might encounter the phantom Zhang Jiao, whom you must defeat.
If Zhang Jiao isn't present and a stop sign appears on the map, you're prematurely positioned. This is advantageous; wait for the battle dialogue and fog to appear.

The first challenge, Escape from Wei Castle in Chapter Four, has the strictest timing requirements. The objective is to escape with Cao Cao, with Dian Wei sacrificing himself to hold off enemies. To obtain the true ending, Dian Wei must survive.
At the battle's start, capture the northwest base, crossing the river and defeating the general. This facilitates ladder placement later. Then, quickly capture the northeast base. Both are necessary for laddermen to appear; though ladders originate from the west, capturing west then east is faster.
You need to capture both bases in under four minutes. Next, return to the map's center and eliminate the ambushing general arriving from below the northwest base and all generals gathered centrally. Allies assist, but you have about two minutes. Laddermen appear; proceed to them immediately, even if the central area isn't fully cleared. The next phase is easier with the area cleared.
Once ladders are up (and you should be across the river), enter the castle and defeat Zhang Xiu, Jia Xu, and Zhang Quan. Zhang Xiu often flees; clearing the center earlier helps allies control him. Dealing with him first might be beneficial, but the other two are initially clustered, allowing area-of-effect attacks to inflict significant damage. This must be done in about two minutes (eight minutes total).

Keeping Guo Jia alive is key at Mt. Bailang, though simply protecting him isn't enough. Speed is crucial, though less so than saving Dian Wei. At the battle's start, capture the immediate northwest base, then proceed to the central area, ignoring forces and heading west to the next base. Capture it, defeating Yuan Mei and Nanlou, then exit via the west gate. Bailuan awaits.
Fighting Bailuan is easier here than on the Wu path; he doesn't drop ice frequently, and you have allies, but time is crucial. He must be defeated quickly. After defeating him, he'll make one of two comments. "Really wish to pursue this bloodstained path" indicates success; "longer than expected" (Guo Jia will also comment) means failure.
When your forces ambush beyond Bailuan, the "Fate Altered" message appears. Otherwise, restart. Complete the battle, including fighting Bailuan again.
Unlike Sun Jian's Wu path, simply reaching this point with Dian Wei and Guo Jia alive isn't sufficient (both are necessary). At the Battle of Chibi, Zhuge Liang signals to burn Cao Cao's fleet. To get the true ending, stop Zhuge Liang at the prayer altar (southwest corner of the map) as soon as the ship lands. Eliminating generals en route helps.
Proceed to the rear of Cao Cao's fleet to engage Huang Gai. If you arrive too early, Guo Jia suggests leaving; stay on the boat, closer to the front. When Huang Gai arrives, he reveals his treachery.
