Destiny 2: Heresy Episode – A Guide to the Opening Missions

Destiny 2's Heresy episode begins with a unique two-part opening mission, a departure from the usual single introductory mission. This guide will walk you through both missions: Espial and Recce.

Espial: A Speedy Start

Espial is a shorter mission where you'll primarily use your Sparrow or Skimmer. Here's how to complete it:

1. Upon landing, immediately utilize your vehicle to reach a large clearing with a central fountain. Three Darkness Rifts will appear, guarded by Taken.
2. Locate and destroy the rifts. One is near a cliff, another atop a broken bridge, and the last near a rusted bus. Weapons like Outbreak Perfected are effective.
3. Enter the tunnel opened by destroying the rifts, keeping left at the first intersection.
4. In the next open area, jump off the ledge to the right of the tunnel entrance and proceed left along the road.
5. At the path split, take the lower, right-hand roadway, following it until it turns left.
6. You'll reach a rusted complex infested with Taken, where you'll face your first boss: Gorkall the Gatekeeper.

Defeating Gorkall the Gatekeeper

Gorkall is a Taken Ogre with two phases separated by an immunity phase. High DPS weapons, especially those dealing precision damage to its eye, are recommended. Stay at ground level to avoid its eye beam attacks.

At 50% health, Gorkall gains a shield, and three more rifts appear—one above the boss, and two on either side of the arena. Destroy the rifts to break his immunity and finish him off. His defeat opens a Taken anchor portal leading to the Dreadnaught.

Recce: A Journey Through the Dreadnaught

Recce is significantly longer, beginning after entering the Taken anchor portal. It starts with a challenging platforming section:

1. Navigate the tentacles and floating rocks to reach a distant anchor.
2. Continue across more floating platforms and tentacles to a portal leading to the Dreadnaught.

Once inside the Dreadnaught, familiar territory for Destiny 1 players (with a few tentacular additions!), follow the path:

1. Proceed up the staircase, keeping left through the openings and across the chasm using the provided bridges.
2. Go through the opening in the far wall and then through the smaller tunnel to the left.
3. Follow the path until you trigger a cutscene with Eris and the Drifter.

After the cutscene, proceed across the chitin bridges, past the Ogres. If you lack a sword, take the right path to the King's Fall Raid starting area and head down the hallway to the ritual site.

Confronting Felghul the Requisitioner

At the ritual site, you'll face Felghul the Requisitioner, a Taken Knight with three immunity phases. You'll need to defeat Barrier Conjurers to break his immunity each time. Manage the waves of endlessly spawning enemies while dealing damage to Felghul. After his defeat, acquire the Tablet of Ruin.

The Final Encounter and Beyond

Proceed through the green-tinted hallway, avoiding the Suffocating Terror debuff by staying below the level of the giant Taken eyes. The final encounter involves destroying Pyramid structures by shooting the Taken Blights on their surfaces in this order: Close right, Mid-left, Far-right, Mid-right. The mission concludes with a cutscene featuring Eris and the Drifter.
