From Android Skeptic to Samsung Enthusiast: Why I'm Sticking with My Galaxy Z Fold
I used to judge those who upgraded their iPhones annually. As an Android user, I didn't understand. Now, owning a Galaxy Z Fold 6 (after the Z Fold 5), I get it. My current phone is exceptional, and I see no compelling reason to switch.
My Galaxy Z Fold: The Perfect Package
For years, I longed for a phone that truly met my needs. Inconsistent interfaces and limited app functionality frustrated me. Then came the Z Fold 6. This device is unlike anything I've owned. I love its design, both folded and unfolded, its minimalist aesthetic, and its versatility. It's perfect for reading digital comics and ebooks – there's something inherently satisfying about reading on a book-shaped device.
Gaming is enhanced on the larger screen, and the stylus has become indispensable. I've finally found the ideal phone and software combination.
Why Samsung Beats the Competition
While other book-style foldables exist (Google's Pixel Fold and OnePlus Open), they lack key features. Samsung DeX, a desktop mode, is a game-changer. It's replaced my PC, allowing me to connect my phone to a monitor, AR glasses, or a lapdock for a full desktop experience. Switching brands would mean buying a new PC and altering my workflow.
The stylus is another crucial element. Note-taking is effortless and socially distinct from texting. Samsung's first-party apps (Internet, Notes, My Files, Gallery, Calendar, Reminders, and Music) are superior to Google's alternatives. The extensive customization options, including unique gestures, further solidify my preference.
The Power of the Samsung Ecosystem
My Samsung devices (fridge, TV, Watch, Buds FE) weren't all planned purchases, yet they work seamlessly together. The automatic device recognition between my earbuds and phone/TV is impressive. Screen mirroring from phone to TV is incredibly convenient.
I now understand the appeal of an ecosystem. Samsung's is as good as Apple's, but less restrictive.
No Reason to Switch...Yet
I keep up with competitors like Pixel and OnePlus. While features like OnePlus's OpenCanvas multitasking are tempting, I'm unwilling to sacrifice Samsung DeX, the superior apps, customization, stylus integration, and readily available repair services. The marginal gains from other phones don't outweigh these losses.
Samsung's Ongoing Appeal
My loyalty isn't unconditional. Exciting innovations from competitors or stagnation from Samsung could change my mind. However, the One UI 7 update and Project Moohan XR headset suggest Samsung's innovation continues. While DeX needs improvement, the overall experience remains compelling. Until another company offers a similarly versatile and customizable foldable, I'll likely stick with Samsung, potentially upgrading to a tri-fold in the future.
