Mystic Messenger Zen romance: General tips

Zen has an arrogant exterior masking deep insecurities, and needs his ego propped up constantly and regular reassurance that he’s not just a pretty face. While he makes no bones about looking for love, he’s wary of women who want to trap and control him because of his status. He wants someone who is as interested in his own success as he is, who will show enthusiasm for his work above everything else.

If you earn a grey Heart while interacting, that means he has had a strong reaction to your choices. In general, you can win Zen’s heart in Mystic Messenger by following these guidelines whenever he is present in a chat:

Dos:

• Respect Zen’s independence.
• Encourage Zen to make peace.
• Compliment Zen on his looks and especially his talents.
• Be romantic.
• Be open and get personal.
• Put Zen’s career ahead of flirting.
• Say you're going to think of Zen.
• Tell Zen you miss him.
• Call him “lovely Zen”.
• Encourage Zen to be cheerful.
• Tell Zen not to be discouraged or speak ill of himself and his future.
• Be open about your feelings for Zen with other characters.

Don’ts:

• Don’t side with Jumin.
• Don't be aggressive with Jaehee.
• Don’t be possessive or controlling.
• Don’t gush over cats.
• Don’t shy away when Zen wants to talk.

Mystic Messenger Zen romance: Common route (Days 0-4) walkthrough

We haven't listed every possible Mystic Messenger chat here; there are plenty of others to participate in during Days 1 through 4, but they don't contain opportunities to earn hearts for Zen's route. These ones do.

You don't need to hit up every chat we've listed here to unlock the Zen route, so don't worry about that one at 3:03, for example. If you are going to spend HG and unlock missed chats, though, you can see which ones are important at a glance. In general, the longer a chat is, the more hearts you'll earn.

Although you should try to participate in other chats besides those listed below, don't worry too much about making "wrong" choices in those; as long as you spread your hearts around between the other characters, you won't alter your ending. We're here to help you experience Zen's story the way you want to! Like all Mystic Messenger characters, Zen's route offers multiple endings; so in addition to the advice above that ensures you get his Good Ending, here's a breakdown of how to reach his other endings too:

• Zen Normal End: Reach the party with 0-9 opened RSVP emails.
• Zen Good End: Reach the party with 10 or more opened RSVP emails.
• Zen Bad Story End 1: Select incorrect answers (hostile or bored with Zen) through to the Day 7 branch point. If done correctly, you should trigger Bad End 1 after one visual novel section and one chat.
• Zen Bad Story End 2: Select correct until past the Day 7 branch point. Switch to incorrect answers (push Zen to quit his job). If done correctly, you should trigger Bad End 2 after two chats and two visual novel sections.
• Zen Bad Story End 3: Select correct answers through the Day 9 branch point. Switch to incorrect answers (hostile to 707 and the RFA). You should trigger Bad End 3 after the Day 10 branch point.
• Zen Bad Relationship End 1: Score below 30% chat participation or win more hearts for another character than Zen on Days 5 through 7.
• Zen Bad Relationship End 2: Pass the Day 7 branch, then score below 30% chat participation or win more hearts for another character than Zen on Days 8 through 10.

Judicious use of saves can help you get all these down with just one visit to Zen’s route. You will need to reload your save six times, so it will cost you 30 HG in total. Make sure you understand the rules for reloading saves before you do this! Here’s the most efficient method:

• Do not open RSVP emails (those you receive after three correct replies).
• Make a manual save after reaching Day 5, then achieve Bad Relationship End 1.
• Reload your save and achieve Bad Story End 1.
• Reload your save and achieve Bad Relationship End 2.
• Reload your save, progress to the Day 7 branch point, make a second save, then achieve Bad Story End 2.
• Reload your second save, then achieve Bad Story End 3.
• Reload your second save, then achieve Normal End.
