Chrome and Google iPhone Apps Are Getting Circle-To-Search

Google Lens gets a significant upgrade for iPhone users, bringing it closer to Android's Circle to Search functionality. Two key improvements have been announced: screen search and enhanced AI Overviews.

The new screen search feature, available in both the Chrome and Google apps, lets users visually search any on-screen element (text, image, or video) by simply selecting it—drawing, highlighting, or tapping. In Chrome, access is via the three-dot menu, with a dedicated Lens icon coming soon to the address bar. The Google app offers a similar "Search this Screen" option within its three-dot menu.

While similar to Android's Circle to Search, this iPhone implementation is limited to Chrome and the Google app, unlike the system-wide access on Android. This limitation is due to iOS's operating system constraints.

The second major update leverages advanced AI models to improve Google Lens's ability to understand and provide information on less common images. Instead of relying solely on image matching, Lens now offers AI-powered Overviews, providing summaries and links to relevant resources for unique or unusual visual searches. No additional questions are needed from the user.

This enhanced Google Lens experience will be rolling out to iPhone users starting next week.
