Apple's new Apple Intelligence: AI features on iOS 18.2 and iPhone 16
Apple heavily promoted its Apple Intelligence AI suite at the iPhone 16 and iOS 18 launch events. These tools are now rolling out (though some upgrades are pending), offering enhanced iPhone functionality. Access requires an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or any iPhone 16 model.
Setting up Apple Intelligence
iOS 18 prompts you to set up Apple Intelligence upon upgrade. Alternatively, navigate to Settings > More for Your iPhone > Set Up Apple Intelligence. A tutorial explains and demonstrates the AI features. You can also enable notification summaries during setup, allowing Apple Intelligence to consolidate notifications from the same app. Choose categories (News & Entertainment, Communication & Social, All Other Apps) for summarization.
AI image creation tools (Image Playground, Genmoji, Image Wand) require separate download. Launch the Image Playground app to initiate the download. This setup also covers Genmoji (emoji creation from text prompts) and Image Wand (sketch-to-AI-image conversion within the Notes app).
Finally, integrate ChatGPT with Siri via Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT. Connect an existing ChatGPT account (a ChatGPT Plus account enhances capabilities) or use it without connecting.
The Apple Intelligence & Siri settings menu manages AI features, enabling/disabling them and controlling app access.
Using Apple Intelligence
Apple Intelligence features fall into three categories:
Visual Intelligence (iPhone 16 exclusive) uses ChatGPT to describe camera views and provide information.
Future updates include advanced Siri responses (iOS 18.4) and a potential Apple ChatGPT competitor. Additional picture styles for Image Playground are also anticipated.
