The quickest way to set up a new PC
This article has been updated since its original publication on January 22, 2020.
Unboxing a new laptop is exciting, but the setup process can be a major time sink. While I once enjoyed the meticulous process of setting up a new computer from scratch, my priorities have shifted. Now, I want to minimize setup time and maximize productivity. Here's how I streamline the process:
Eliminate Bloatware:
New PCs often come pre-loaded with unwanted software (bloatware). You can either uninstall each program individually via the "Add or remove programs" option in the Start menu, or use Windows' "Fresh Start" feature for a complete clean slate. While "Fresh Start" is convenient, manually uninstalling programs is often faster unless you encounter stubborn applications. If unsure about a program's purpose, consult resources like Should I Remove It? to determine if it's safe to delete. If you choose "Fresh Start," remember to back up any essential license keys or files beforehand. Afterward, reinstall necessary drivers from your manufacturer's website (e.g., Dell, Lenovo) and update graphics drivers from NVIDIA or AMD, as needed.
Bulk Install Your Apps:
Manually installing numerous applications is tedious. I use Ninite, a free tool that allows you to select multiple applications and install them all at once via a single executable file. This significantly accelerates the process. While some apps might require manual installation, Ninite handles the majority. For certain apps, I utilize portable versions (ZIP downloads) that don't require installation, making them easily transferable between devices.
Data Migration and Settings Synchronization:
After installing applications, restore your settings and data. Logging into Windows with a Microsoft account will automatically sync many settings. Similarly, using your Google or Firefox account will sync your browser data. Cloud-based apps (Evernote, Spotify, etc.) typically handle settings synchronization.
For apps without built-in syncing, check for an "Export" option to save preferences. Transfer this file via a flash drive or cloud storage to your new PC and import it. Alternatively, you can manually copy the app's AppData folder (located in C:UsersYOURNAMEAppDataRoaming
) to the same location on your new computer.
Finally, use an external hard drive to transfer your personal files (Documents, Pictures, Videos, etc.) from your old PC's user folder (C:Users
) to your new one.
