How to avoid AI in your Google searches
Google is aggressively integrating AI into its products, and its search engine is no exception. At Google I/O 2024, the company unveiled AI-powered search results driven by a specialized version of its Gemini AI model. While initially tested with a limited user base, this feature is now rolling out to all US users, with global availability planned soon. This means that for certain queries, AI-generated summaries will precede traditional web links.
For instance, searching for family-friendly activities in Yosemite might yield AI-curated suggestions before displaying travel websites. However, if you prefer traditional search results without AI interference—perhaps due to concerns about accuracy, privacy, or the overall direction of AI—you can revert to an AI-free experience.
Returning to Traditional Web Search
Simultaneously with the AI integration, Google introduced a "Web" tab. After conducting a search, click "More," then select "Web" to view standard search results without AI-generated content.
To make this your default, follow these steps in Google Chrome:
- Click the three vertical dots (top right), then select "Settings" and "Search engine." (If "Search engine" is absent, click the hamburger menu in the top left.)
- Choose "Manage search engines and site search."
- Click "Add" next to "Site search."
- Name it "Google Web," use "www.google.com" as the shortcut, and enter "{google:baseURL}/search?udm=14&q=%s" in the URL box.
- Click "Add."
Finally, click the three dots next to your new search engine and select "Make default." This ensures all Chrome address bar searches use this setting. Other browsers offer similar default search engine configuration options. Use "https://www.php.cn/link/f4adf97f7420b54cf83734362a8ced38" as the search string for immediate Web tab results.
Alternative Search Engines
Alternatively, consider switching to a non-Google search engine. While Microsoft Bing also incorporates AI features, DuckDuckGo, Ecosia, and Brave Search offer privacy-focused, AI-minimal experiences.
DuckDuckGo prioritizes user privacy, providing clean results with non-intrusive ads. Ecosia uses its advertising revenue for reforestation efforts. Brave Search emphasizes simplicity and privacy, offering a streamlined results page with an optional AI button (AI responses are not displayed by default). These alternatives provide a straightforward and less AI-intensive search experience.
