iOS 17's StandBy Mode: Transform Your iPhone into a Smart Display
iOS 17 introduces StandBy mode, turning your iPhone into a handy smart display. This feature showcases information like calendar appointments and photos, effectively transforming your device into a bedside clock or a convenient information hub.
StandBy mode is compatible with iPhone XR, XS, XS Max (2018 and later models). iPhone 14 and 15 Pro/Pro Max models offer an always-on display for StandBy; other models require a tap or hand wave to activate it.
Enable StandBy mode via Settings > StandBy, toggling the StandBy switch. For iPhones with always-on displays, the Always On switch controls persistent screen visibility.
Automatic activation occurs when your iPhone is charging, propped up at an angle (not flat). Initial activation displays an explanatory message. The default view shows clock and calendar widgets. To deactivate, simply pick up your phone, lay it flat, or unplug it.
Both wired and wireless charging are supported; MagSafe chargers offer personalized settings for different locations.
Swipe left/right to cycle through views (widgets, photos, clock). Swipe up/down within each view to navigate options.
The widgets screen displays two scrollable widget sections. Available widgets include weather, calendar, and reminders, depending on installed apps.
Long-press the widgets screen to remove or add widgets (using minus and plus buttons). Features like Smart Rotate (adjusts widgets based on time and habits) and Widget Suggestions (adds widgets based on app usage) are also available.
Long-pressing the photos screen lets you select a specific photo album. The clock screen currently lacks customizable clock faces.
