Pixel 7 users can now activate Google’s mobile VPN for free

Enhance your online security with Google's free mobile VPN, now available on Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro! This built-in feature provides a private and secure network connection at no extra cost. Google One Premium subscribers ($100/year) can also utilize this VPN on any device.

While initial setup isn't entirely intuitive, subsequent use is straightforward.

Setting up your Google One VPN:

Whether you own a Pixel 7/7 Pro or subscribe to Google One Premium, VPN setup begins within the Google One app. New Pixel devices have the app pre-installed; otherwise, download it from your phone's app store.

On a Pixel 7/7 Pro, after installing Google One, sign in with your phone's primary account. A VPN access notification will appear; tap "Manage" to proceed.

For non-Pixel 7 users, log into the Google One app using your Google One account. On the Home tab, locate the VPN tile and tap "Manage."

On the next screen, toggle "Use VPN" on. Accept the connection request, and your private connection will be established. A small key icon near the clock (top-right corner) indicates active VPN status.

Easy VPN Access:

For quick on/off access, add the VPN tile to your Quick Settings menu. Use two fingers to pull down the notification shade, tap the pencil icon to edit, locate the VPN tile (key icon), and drag it to the top eight positions. Remember, Quick Settings has limited space; prioritize frequently used tiles for optimal placement.

Google VPN Configuration:

Unlike some VPNs, Google's service doesn't allow selecting a browsing location. Your IP address remains tied to your physical location. This limitation prevents bypassing geo-restrictions for content like Netflix's regional catalogs. Some apps block VPNs entirely. To use such apps with the VPN active, configure exceptions within the Google One app.

Go to the VPN tile in the Google One app, tap "Using apps when the VPN is on," then "Update settings." Use the plus sign to add apps that should bypass the VPN. Restart your VPN connection after making changes.

Utilize this VPN for enhanced security, especially when accessing sensitive information on public Wi-Fi networks. Proactive setup ensures readily available protection when needed.
